Celebrate Sicilian wine and food in style on this 8-day walking holiday with a difference. We spend time on the scenic north west coast of Sicily including the lovely Scopello and the remote fishing island of Marettimo.
Highlights: - Visit Scopello and enjoy the dramatic views on the north west - Discover the beautiful Egadi island of Marettimo - Wine tasting in the famous Marsala region - Cookery lessons, creating fabulous Sicilian dishes. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: On arrival at your chosen airport, transfer to Scopello, your base for two nights. Rest of day free to experience this charming village. Find a little cove and take a dip in the crystal clear waters, or relax and enjoy the views over a glass of local wine. Day 2: Today we head into the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro, Sicily's first nature reserve for a delightful walk, enjoying the vistas and passing idyllic coves with plenty of opportunity for swimming. This natural reserve was created with the support of local people and ecologists and is a haven for the rare Bonelli eagle along with an abundance of other bird and plant species. Day 3: This day is dedicated to Sicilian cuisine. As well as discovering the lovely rich aromas from the typical Sicilian dishes, you will also have wine tasting too. In the afternoon transfer to Trapani to take the hydrofoil to Marettimo, the furthest of the Egadi Islands and your base for the next three nights. Day 4: Free day on Marettimo. Marettimo was once a pirate stronghold which discouraged many to settle here; it is home to around 700 inhabitants today. The English author Samuel Butler lived here in 1894 and claimed Marettimo was the original Ithaca, home of Odysseus. At only 7.5 x 2.5 km, this wild and rugged island offers some great walking with the chance to see mountain goats, moufflon and birds of prey. Take the journey to Punta Libeccio and enjoy wonderful mountain views along the way. Day 5: Continue your discovery of Marettimo. Head to Monte Falcone, the highest point at 685 m, passing through a fortress from the Roman Age and a little church dating back to the Byzantine period. Day 6: Return by ferry to Trapani this morning and onto the Marsala area for some wine tasting. On the journey, you will see the Salt Pans in Mozia. In the afternoon you will visit the medieval village of Erice, perched on the hilltop not far from Trapani. Explore the cobbled streets and buildings dating back to the 14th – 17th centuries. On a clear day, from the top of the town and up King Frederick 2nd’s Tower there are some great views looking across to the Egadi Islands and the surrounding countryside and coastline. Head to Castellammare del Golfo for two nights. Day 7: Today enjoy time in the Cofano Natural Reserve, dominated by Monte Cofano standing 659 m high. Take the coastal route and experience a wild coastline and dramatic views as you head towards the summit. In the afternoon there is another cooking class to be enjoyed. Day 8: After check-out, transfer to the airport where the tour ends. Note: This is a guided small group holiday. Notes: Price Includes:
