Day 3 California's Gold Rush Country... and on to Yosemite National Park
Meals B, L, D

Travel through California's Gold Country, with its historic communities created during the Gold Rush boom years of the 1850s. Then head into the Sierra Nevada to Yosemite National Park for two nights at one of the most distinctive hotels ever built inside a national park – The Ahwahnee, a National Historic Landmark constructed in 1927. Dine à la carte this evening in the award-winning Ahwanee Dining Room, where floor-to-ceiling windows look out on the grandeur of Yosemite.

Day 4 Savoring a national treasure – Yosemite National Park
Meals B

Yosemite National Park's unequaled splendors range from magnificent waterfalls to spectacular glacier-hewn gorges, and represent five of the seven life zones found in North America – all in an area about the size of Rhode Island. Start discovering it all with our enriching, privately guided two-hour morning walking tour of Yosemite with a local naturalist. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is then yours to explore as you please for the rest of the day.

Day 5 Wawona & the Big Trees of Yosemite's Mariposa Grove
Meals B, L, D

Today you'll depart The Ahwahnee after breakfast and head to the historic village of Wawona; set entirely inside Yosemite, it was established as a tourist and rest stop after the discovery of the "Big Trees" of the Mariposa Grove in the 1850s, decades before the area became a national park. Have lunch at the Wawona Hotel, a classic Victorian-era lodge built in the 1870s and now a National Historic Landmark. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park is home to about 500 ancient, towering sequoia trees – many of them "celebrities" with distinctive names, such as the Grizzly Giant, believed to be between 1,900 and 2,400 years old! Check them out and hear some of their stories as you visit the grove this afternoon. Later, arrive at your mountain resort just outside Yosemite National Park, where dinner is at your leisure this evening.

Day 6 Through the lush San Joaquin Valley to Monterey
Meals B, L, D

Leaving Yosemite National Park, enjoy a demonstration of authentic early mining equipment on a morning visit to the Mariposa Museum and History Center. After lunch, your California tour begins winding its way through the rich farmland of the San Joaquin Valley; along with the Salinas Valley, the two regions have been dubbed "America's Salad Bowl" due to their production of citrus fruit, leafy vegetables and nuts. Stop in the quiet town of Merced, then continue on to fashionable Carmel-by-the-Sea on the Pacific coast, taking some time to explore the town's celebrated galleries and boutiques. Arrive in the beautiful, historic coastal city of Monterey for a two-night stay; your accommodation is set close to the famed Monterey Bay Aquarium. Dine at your leisure at this evening.

Day 8 Dramatic Highway 1 to Big Sur, Hearst Castle & Santa Barbara
Meals B, L, D

Our California tour expertise takes you past redwood forests and playful seals along one of the most scenic drives in North America... the Pacific Coast Highway portion of California State Highway 1. View the rugged coastline of Big Sur as the dramatic road weaves its way southward along the Pacific Ocean. Stop along the way to marvel at the elaborate adornments of Hearst Castle (San Simeon) – the grandiose, "study in excess" estate of publisher William Randolph Hearst, and the model for the fictional "Xanadu" in the movie Citizen Kane – on a walking tour of the historic 165-room mansion. Today's final destination is your oceanfront Four Seasons resort on the "American Riviera" in beautiful Santa Barbara.
