On this page you will find some of the different kinds of camel safaris in Northern Tanzania that we offer. Our safari combines camel back-riding and walking throughout popular areas with a few that are seldom seen by western visitors. They offer a good alternative if you want to get up close to the animals of the African bush and to the local communities without sitting in a vehicle all day.
The Mkuru camel safaris range from 1-7 days and are run throughout Maasai land, in the Lengai-Meru-Kilimanjaro Mountain Complex. But we have combined this with Safaris to Ngorongoro Serengeti, Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park. You will arrive at the Mkuru Camel Camp and you will welcome by local Maasai guides. Choosing to walk or ride the camels, bedecked with comfortable and modern leather saddles, you will set off around the savannah with views as stretching as far as you can see. The pace is leisurely and, on the way, wildlife and birds will be pointed out as well as plants and trees traditionally used by the Maasai. Accommodation: All safaris and special programs start from Mkuru Camel camp, with the most incredible view, Mkuru Camel Camp is situated on the north side of Mt. Meru, not far away from the irrigated fields of Ngarenanyuki and the Momella gate of the Arusha National Park. The area around the camp is alive with colourful birds, small mammals, zebra and giraffe in the plains to the north, and is corridor for elephants travelling between Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Not far from the camp, Maasai Families are living in small traditional Bomas. The camp is set among acacias and designed to complement the environment. Comfortable tends, simple bathrooms and cooking facilities are available. At night you will relax by a campfire, listening to animals sounds under a roof of stars. Or Lodges in Arusha National Park or outside National Park. Camel Ride and Walking Safaris: Mt. Longido Camel Safari: If you are looking for a short but intense adventure, this is the safari for you. You will go through the plains below Mt Meru, where the Maasai steps start to become wild. The Longido Mountains is your "guide" and will always tell you the right direction. You will cross different kind of antelopes, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and many birds. The friendship of extraordinary Maasai and the unusual bush life are the fulcrum of our safaris. Baboons Cave Camel Safari: If you want to know more about the Maasai culture and if you wish to escape from the town stress for one day, this is the safari for you. A short but intense experience. You will visit a baboon cave, which every night is invaded by more than 300 baboons. The extraordinary of this place, where it is still possible to observe e good try of a dam made in the colonial period, are the youth "Morani" and the old "Olpaiani" Maasai in the "Orpul". A traditional Maasai period of men`s life, after which they become fitter and stronger. Mkuru Walking Safari: The Maasai culture has a mystery in all its activities. The only way you can get to know what has never been written, is to meet them personally. They will show you their boma, they will tell you about their bush life experiences, they will really enchant you with their stories. Mkuru is an unique Maasai village, which still lives and conserves the original Maasai traditions. Ol Donyo Landare Walking Safari: Get some exercise and climb to the top of this pyramid. Ol Donyo Landare means the mountain of goat in Maasai language. During all year it is possible to find little Maasai shepherds grazing their livestock on the small hill. From on top of the Ol Donyo Landare, the view is amazing. On the south part, you can see the top of little Meru Mt and on the north-east side the Kilimanjaro is floating on the endless savannah.
