Your English-speaking driver would drive you there. Ostia was founded in Republican times by Ancus Martius, the fourth king of Rome. The latin word Ostia means estuary, a clear reference to the fact that it stands at the mouth of the Tiber. Once there, you will be literally enchanted by its magic, the tiny glimpses of everyday life animating each corner of this marvellous place. The mosaics distinguishing the interior of its temples, Roman baths, shops, mills, taverns and public cloakrooms, frescoed walls, stuccoed decorations and statues will help the visitor understand many aspects of everyday life in a busy Roman market town during the age of the adoptive emperors and the Severian dynasty. Is there a special place you want to go visit? Did you hear about a spot that isn’t on “the tourist trail”? Please, tell us!
