This is an exhilarating itinerary combining a spectacular trek in Sikkim with a journey to the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan. Our introductory trek follows trails through magnificent rhododendron forest (in full bloom in May) to verdant yak grazing pastures where we camp beneath the magnificent backdrop of Kangchenjunga. In between we visit the renowned hill station of Darjeeling, the thriving capital of Gangtok and the legendary town of Kalimpong. Travelling to Bhutan we have opportunities for day walks to visit the ancient dzongs (forts) and Buddhist monasteries in the Paro and Thimphu valleys to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the kingdom.
Day 1: Join Kathmandu.
Day 2: Fly to Bhadrapur, transfer to Darjeeling.
Day 3: In Darjeeling, visit tea plantations and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.
Day 4: Drive to Yuksam (Sikkim).
Days 5-11: Trek through luxuriant rhododendron forest to gain unrivalled views of Kangchenjunga.
Days 12-13: Drive to Gangtok, visit Rumtek Monastery.
Day 14: Transfer to Kalimpong.
Day 15: Drive to Phuentsholing (Bhutan).
Days 16-17: Transfer to Thimphu, visit the memorial Chorten and wander the bazaars.
Days 18-19: In Paro visit the Paro Dzong and renowned Taktsang monastery.
Day 20: In Paro, trip concludes
