Steelpan and Calypso are like bread and butter. You won't find one without the other. The Music Festival test piece is a calypso tune arranged classically. Calypso is a unique genre of music that originated, like the steeldrum did, on the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso music is characterized by infectious rhythms, socially conscious lyrics and harmonic vocals. Calypso History Month is packed with calypso shows and lectures on this charming genre of music. We will introduce you to the living legends of calypso like the Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Lord Superior, Gypsy and many more. Our extensive library of books, cds, dvds and magazines will be yours to take advantage of and inspect.
D'Lime Inn and conference center at the Diego Martin Pan Institute will be your home away from home for how long you decide to stay. The backyard has a swimming pool, stage and bar. There are 6 different varieties of steeldrums for you to examine and experience. Your host and master steelpan artist, Clyde Lightning George, will give you a private lesson on this wonderful new instrument, pan. It is claimed that pan is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century. Besides a one hour steelpan lesson from one of Trinidad's greats, your hostess and yoga master, Cathy George, will give you 4 yoga classes. Both classes are included in the one week package.
