For our Ethiopia Birding in Style tour, we have handpicked the prime birding locations in central Ethiopia and chosen only premier lodges. This tour spends ample time exploring the Rift Valley lakes, game viewing in Awash National Park and ascending to the top of the breath-taking Bale Mountains, home of the rare Ethiopian Wolf.
Ethiopia's highland endemics will form the core of our birding as we search out Blue-winged Goose, Rouget's Rail, Spot-breasted Lapwing, Abyssinian Longclaw, White-backed Black Tit, White-cheeked Turaco, Abyssinian Catbird, Yellow-fronted Parrot and Abyssinian Woodpecker. Awash National Park is undoubtedly the best game viewing area in Ethiopia and our chances of locating the scarce Soemmering's Gazelle, Grevy's Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Bat-eared Fox, Lesser Kudu and even Striped Hyena are good. The spectacular Arabian Bustard, Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse, Black Scrub Robin, Nile Valley Sunbird and Yellow-breasted Barbet are all good possibilities while in the area. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa. Day 2: Addis Ababa to Lake Awassa. Day 3: Lake Awassa. Day 4: Lake Awassa to Goba. Day 5: Goba and excursion to Sof Omar. Day 6: Goba and excursion to the Bale Mountain National Park. Day 7: Goba to Bishangari. Day 8: Lake Langano and surrounds. Day 9: Bishangari to Awash National Park. Days 10 & 11: Awash National Park. Day 12: Awash National Park to Addis Ababa and departure. The brief yet exciting extension will commence at the ancient city of Gondar, famed for its spectacular medieval castles. We will then continue to the lofty heights of the awe-inspiring Simien Mountains National Park, which holds the only populations of the rare and highly sought-after Walia Ibex. Here we can also expect a bounty of birds as well as a wonderful selection of very scarce and range-restricted mammals, including Gelada Baboons and, with a bit of luck, Ethiopian Wolf – the world’s rarest canid. We will also visit the northern town of Lalibela, where we will explore the unique 12th century monolithic churches hewn out of solid rock, now appropriately considered one of the wonders of the world. The spectacular scenery, fascinating history, diverse cultures and astonishing wildlife make this a really superb finale to one of the most thoroughly enjoyable destinations in Africa!
