The Savé Valley Conservancy, situated in the fabulous south-east lowveld region, is one of Zimbabwe’s most exciting wildlife destinations. Encompassing over 1,300 square miles, it is the largest privately owned reserve in Africa. Little affected by the recent troubles in Zimbabwe, it provides a safe-haven for the full suite of African big game and over 400 species of birds. We can expect up-close-and-personal encounters with Elephant, Buffalo, the endangered African Wild Dog and Black Rhinoceros, as well as numerous antelope species.
The superb Mopane woodlands are home to avian specials such as the smart Arnot’s Chat, noisy Racket-tailed Roller, White-breasted Cuckooshrike and Southern Hyliota. One of the most sought-after birds in Zimbabwe, the localized Boulder Chat, is resident in the lodge grounds itself, and can be viewed at leisure from our open-fronted luxury lodgings. Other habitats we will explore include wetlands, grasslands, Acacia savanna and riverine forest, and we will without a doubt rack up a long and impressive bird list! We will also have the opportunity of walking safaris, including tracking Black Rhino, as well as visiting several magnificent panels of San (Bushman) rock art. Exciting night drives offer the opportunity for numerous nocturnal species including Leopard, Brown Hyena, African Civet and, if we are very fortunate, Aardvark and Ground Pangolin. On the avian front, Bronze-winged Courser, Pennant-winged Nightjar, plus numerous species of owls, including Southern White-faced, the huge Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and African Barred Owlet may be anticipated. We end this tour in the scenic Bvumba area of the Eastern Highlands which offers prime birding. Besides two regional endemics (Chirinda Apalis and Robert’s Prinia) we will seek out numerous other Afromontane and Miombo specials, including the delightful Swynnerton’s Robin, Spotted Creeper, Cinnamon-breasted Tit, Red-throated Twinspot, Red-faced Crimsonwing and Cabanis’s Bunting.
