The wonders of the central Chinese coniferous forests await us on this classic, once in a lifetime adventure. Our search for the magnificent Giant Panda will take us on an epic journey into one of the world’s most spectacular natural areas – the Qinling Mountains in the heart of the Chinese countryside. These temperate forests hold the largest and densest remaining population of Giant Panda in the world (up to one panda per mile²!), and we will spend seven full days in the area in our attempt to locate one of the planet’s most iconic mammals. Aside from the Giant Pandas, these mountains are also home to a plethora of seldom seen wildlife, and other notable species we will search for include the magnificent Golden Takin, the Red-and-white Giant Flying-Squirrel, and the Chinese Snub-nosed (Golden) Monkey.
Whilst exploring two nature reserves in the Qinling Range, the beautiful birds to be found here will not be ignored, and will certainly feature as part of our daily highlights. These avian treasures include the brilliant Golden Pheasant, the rare Temminck’s Tragopan, Red-billed Leiothrix, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, and the strange looking Great Parrotbill. The Chinese Crested Ibis will no doubt be high on many of our wish lists, and we will make a concerted effort to see this exceedingly endangered bird by visiting one of their roosting sites. Aside from the awesome natural spectacles, China is also steeped in history and our tour includes several interesting aspects of China’s past. The most notable of these is a visit to the marvellous Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum; a world cultural heritage site and one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. This incredible voyage will take us into several seldom-visited areas where the beauty of the natural scenery and wildlife will simply overwhelm the senses! Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Xi’an.
