8-Day photo tour to famous places like ancient Sparta, Byzantine Mystras, the intriguing Mani peninsula, the picturesque town of Nafplio, the castle of Mycenae and the ancient theater of Epidavros. This photo tour is open for everyone with a digital camera – DSLR or advanced compact. Assignments and instructions will be given according to the level and experience of each participant. On each location we take ample time to enjoy and take photos. We cover various types of outdoor photography: landscape, nature, street-life, and close-up photography. Every afternoon we view and discuss the photos together, followed by a joint dinner in one of the great restaurants in Xirokambi or Nafplio. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival. Arrival in Xirokambi. We meet the tour facilitators at the beautiful hotel Taleton and go for dinner on the nearby village square. Stay in Xirokambi, hotel Taleton. Day 2: Byzantine Mystras. We spend most part of today photographing the churches, monasteries and ruins of the Byzantine city of Mystras. Mystras was the last capital of the Byzantine or Greek-Roman Empire. In 1460 the city was conquered by the Ottomans. Nowadays it is an open-air museum. The churches and monasteries are excellent practice ground for shooting indoor photos without flash. From the hill we have a great view over a sea of olive trees. Mystras is on a half hour drive from Xirokambi trough the olive groves. Stay in Xirokambi, hotel Taleton. Day 3: Mani peninsula. We make an early start for our photography day trip to the Mani peninsula. The Mani is the central peninsula of the Peloponnese and a fascinating area. Tower houses dominate the historic villages, while the bleak and rocky scenery makes it a great place for landscape photography. Our first stop is the picturesque town of Aeropolis. We continue to the traditional settlement of Vathia and take a walk to the lighthouse of Cape Tenaro, the southern most tip of continental Europe. Here you can also take a dive into the Mediterranean before we head back to Xirokambi. Stay in Xirokambi, hotel Taleton. Day 4: Xirokambi. Today we stay in and around Xirokambi. We go to the nearby ancient bridge – the oldest walkable stone arch bridge in Europe – and the impressive Anakolou gorge, stroll through olive groves and visit the village square for coffee and photos. Depending on the season we include a photo shoot of specific activities like harvest or traditional crafts. Stay in Xirokambi, hotel Taleton Day 5: Sparta. In the morning we take the local bus to visit nearby Sparta. The remains of this famous city are hidden between ancient olive trees with the Taygetus Mountains as impressive backdrop. The new city is within walking distance and has a vibrant agricultural center with a well visited vegetable market on Wednesday mornings. We take ample time for photography in both locations. Stay in Xirokambi. Day 6: Mycenae and Nafplio. In the morning we leave for Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece and our pitch for the next three days. Before we check into our centrally located and charming hotel, we visit the ancient citadel of Mycenae. The fortress is impressive, not only because of its history, but also because of the huge stones that were used to build its walls. While photographing on location, we try to capture the scale of the place. Stay in Nafplio. Day 7: Epidavros and Nafplio. We leave early for the sanctuary and ancient open air theater of Epidavros. We take ample time for photography on this impressive location, before returning to Nafplio. Here we explore the old town with its narrow streets, the marble square and the seafront. We capture the atmosphere of the city and enjoy the sunset from the harbour. Stay in Nafplio. Day 8: Departure. Member discount: Notes: Price Includes:
