Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Bled. Individual arrival to Bled. Your chosen hotel is in in a quiet part of the town, above the lake (the 4* hotel has been voted by our guests as best overall hotel in 2011!). Bled is known for it’s beautiful setting, lake, castle on the rock above the lake and a pilgrimage church on the island (4* hotel). Day 2: Bled – Ribcev Laz (Bohinj) – Škofja Loka (84 km). Cycling downhill, at the foot of Mount Triglav. Triglav National Park, very peaceful area. We liked: stunning mountain scenery. The valley of Bohinj is a peaceful area of deep woods, touching monuments from WW2 and old farm houses. From Bohinj follows then a slow climb up to Jelovica High plateau, pass of 750 m / 2400 ft. (small hotel 3*). Sorica – tiny little village, set in the heart of hills. Birthplace of a famous Slovene painter – visit a gallery. We liked: Deep forest on the way. If time allows, take a swim in the new pool complex in Bohinjska Bistrica (hotel 3*). Day 3: Skofja Loka – Ljubljana - Vrhnika (72 km; 89 km with a detour). Flatlands, easy biking trip. Tour goes across Ljubljansko Barje, large flatland, former marsh area surrounding the capital; flat. Main attractions: Slovene capital, old town centre, and lovely “fin de siecle” mansions. Mighty fortress above the city. We liked: relaxing with a drink on the bank of Ljubljanica river. Evening walk, enjoying lights and sounds of the city. A short walk into Iski Vintgar gorge nature reserve, remains of the world highest railway viaduct in Borovnica, Technical Museum of republic of Slovenia – there’s a great hunting collection and an exhibition on Tito’s’ cars (4* hotel). Day 4: Vrhnika – Postojna – Stanjel (79 km). Hilly day, side roads. Flat sections cross typical Carst fields. Main attractions: some real Slovenia - away from main tourist routes and off beaten track. We liked: a picnic lunch in the nature reserve Rakov Škocjan - underneath some beautiful landscape forms. Postojna caves - world famous attraction - so far nearly 30 million visitors! Beautiful limestone formations, not forgetting to mention the unique “human fish”! A detour possibility to Predjama castle. The last Slovene knight once owned it. Learn about his romantic destiny (2* country inn). Day 5: Stanjel – Lipica - Trieste – Koper (40 km). Mostly flat, one longer but gradual climb. And then long downhill from Carst high plateau to Trieste. Main attractions: botanical garden in Sežana, stud farm of Lipica. Unusual but very interesting “war museum” set in a village tower of Lokev (hotel 4*). We liked: Lipicaner horses - known from Vienna Spanish riding school. Got to see their show, or go for a ride with a carriage. Cappuccino in Trieste old-fashioned caffes. Alternatively you can skip Trieste and enjoy an afternoon on the beach! Part of the trip can be taken by a shuttle boat connecting Trieste with outskirts town of Muggia. Alternatively you can skip Trieste and enjoy an afternoon on the beach! - Tour A. Route through Slovenia – 55 km, descend into the valley of Hrastovlje, where a known church featuring an interesting “death dance” fresco can be visited. This variant goes through quiet countryside. - Tour B. Route through Italy (50 km) and the lively port of Trieste - once an important port with its worldly flair and atmosphere.
