Scenic Southern Iceland is a wonderland of nature’s beauty.

A tour of the beautiful South coast, where we will explore some of Iceland’s most interesting and beautiful locations. This is a guided jeep tour and you need to add nights in Reykjavik before and after the tour.

Of a population numbering just over a quarter of a million, half live in the capital, Reykjavik, and its neighboring towns in the southwest. Keflavik International Airport is located about 50km from the capital. The highland interior is uninhabited (and uninhabitable), and most of the population is situated along the coast.

In spite of its mid-Atlantic location, Iceland is on Greenwich Mean Time all year round. There is a five-hour time difference between New York and Iceland. Iceland is served only by Icelandair from the USA with departures from New York, Boston, Baltimore and Minneapolis. Flight time is about 5-6 hours from the USA and 4-5 hours from Europe. Stop-overs in Iceland are allowed on flights between USA and Europe usually at no additional airfare.

A good introduction to the nature of this country along with its culture and society. Special spring and autumn departures as well as summer.

Note it is necessary to book additional nights before and after the tour in Reykjavik.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Monday Reykjavik- Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Morning departure to Hveragerði, a horticultural center, where geothermal water is used to warm greenhouses. From there, the drive takes us over fertile farmlands and sand flats, across glacial rivers to Skógar for a visit to the local folk museum and on to Reynisfjall or Dyrhólaey. Continue to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, former site of a medieval Catholic convent. Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Kirkjubæjarklaustur for two nights.

Day 2: Tuesday Kirkjubæjarklaustur

We drive from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park. Established in 1968, this is one of Iceland's most outstanding areas of natural beauty, dominated by Vatnajökull, Europe's largest icecap. On to the glacial frontal lake Jökulsárlón to take a boat trip among the floating icebergs. Overnight again at Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day 3: Wednesday Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Fludir

From Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the tour follows the Fjallabaksleið interior track to Landmannalaugar. Landmannalaugar is a magnificent area surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains where you have the option of bathing in a natural warm pool. From Landmannalaugar to Þjórsárdalur valley through which Þjórsá, Iceland's longest river (240 km) flows. The valley is dominated by the celebrated volcano Hekla, which last interrupted in year 2000. Overnight at Flúðir.

If road to Landmannalaugar is closed due to road conditions (spring) we drive through lava fields and outwashed sands formed by floods from the glacial volcano Katla on to the village Vík, passing the two beautiful waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi. Then to Þórsmörk valley, a picturesque site beneath glaciers. Overnight at Flúðir at Icelandair Hotel Fludir or similiar.

Day 4: Thursday Fludir - Reykjavík

Departure for the Geysir area to see the famous Great Geysir and Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes, as well as numerous other hot springs and boiling mud pools. On to Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most impressive waterfalls. The next stop is Thingvellir National Park, where the ancient Parliament met in the open for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. Return to Reykjavík in the afternoon.
