Stay at a working cattle ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico. While there, enjoy a range of activities, see historical sights, and obtain instruction in photography so you can capture all of the events and sights. We will be based at the Express UU Bar Ranch which spreads over 180 square miles, staying in first class accommodations, and enjoying ranch style dining.

You will see cowboys and horses, and see them working the cattle, get to visit the high country with fields of wildflowers and wildlife. A special event will be an all-day rodeo and parade in nearby Cimarron. Since this land and Cimarron is located on the old Santa Fe Trail, we can visit the famous St. James hotel which was home to famous lawmen, ranchers, and desperados of old. The resort comes complete with ghosts and the original bullet holes in the restaurant ceiling.

We will also explore the scenic Cimarron Canyon. A re-enactment of Kit Carson days will take place at the fort at the nearby Philmont Boy Scout ranch. Through all this you will receive instruction on using your DSLR camera so that you are sure of capturing these events and sights for your memories and friends. Specifically we will discuss images, camera operations, controlling the camera, shooting procedures, and much more.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive at the ranch, greetings and introductions and hors d’oeuvres.

Day 2: Introduction to the week’s events, discussion of exposure and its controls. Visit the St. James Hotel to photograph it and then on to the scenic Cimarron canyon. We will practice using Aperture Priority and discuss focusing when in the field. The evening is devoted to recognizing and fixing a poor exposure, followed by a briefing on shooting procedures and continuous shooting and bracketing, which will be necessary for the following morning.

Day 3: The morning will be at the ranch photographing cowboys, horses and working the cattle. In the afternoon we will finish our discussion of shooting procedures and advanced controls including variable autofocus settings and metering options. We will then examine composition and some of the dos and don’ts of shooting. The evening will be devoted to critiquing the images taken by the participants.

Day 4: A day at the rodeo, photographing all the action. There will be a parade during the day we can shoot. Later we will visit the fort at the nearby Philmont Boy Scout ranch to see a reenactment of the old days of Kit Carson. In the evening you will receive additional information valuable to your camera operations, find out about the sensor in your camera and talk about the mystery of pixels. Time permitting we will discuss some of the advanced techniques possible with your DSLR.

Day 5: Today we visit the high country for great scenic images, wildflowers, and wildlife. This evening, the ranch will have a special event especially for us.

Day 6: Prepare to leave after breakfast.
