Cestochowa is considered by many as the spiritual capital of Poland. For many years, it has been one of the most prominent places of Marian devotions and the largest pilgrimage center in Poland. The monastery complex of Pauline monks is located on top of the Jasna Góra hill and was named after this mount. The Jasna Góra Monastery is home to a painting (by many considered as sacred) of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus, which according to the legend was painted by Saint Lucas on the wood taken from the Holy Family's dining table. The history of the monastery is closely related to the most important events in Polish history. Pope John Paul II is the honorary citizen of Częstochowa which he visited as a pilgrim on numerous occasions. The visit includes the Holy Virgin Chapel, the Basilica with the presbytery, the Knights' Hall, the 600th-Anniversary Museum and the National Memory Museum.
