Located less than 1-hour outside Ljubljana, the Postojna Caves have caught mankind’s attention since prehistoric times and remain one of the top tourist attractions in Slovenia today. A network of 14 miles (23 kilometers) of passages, galleries and halls, the limestone karst system dates back more than 2 million years.

This 5-hour sightseeing tour from the Slovene capital will take you to the caves where you can ride an electric train to admire the astonishing underground world of stalactites and stalagmites.

The cave train takes you into the depths where, thanks to electric lighting, you can appreciate the full dimensions and strange nuances of the underground karst system and see its geological past written in a truly unique way.

Follow the train ride with a guided walk through a series of cave halls with drop stones, pillars and translucent curtains that create an unforgettable impression.

The caves are home to the unique and mysterious amphibian Proteus Anguinus, or Olm. Known locally as the “human fish” for its flesh-toned color, the blind creature lives exclusively in the caves of central and southeastern Europe. Keep your eye out for the rare aquatic creature before moving on to Predjama Castle.

Situated just 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the caves, you will take a short drive to the mountains where the medieval castle perches proudly on its spectacular cliff top setting.

The renovated castle rooms will give you an idea of how people lived in the area over 700 years ago, while the brave can ascend a secret tunnel built by the romantic “robber baron” Erazem of Predjama.
