Back-country Skiing in Bulgaria: Bulgaria, located near Greece and Macedonia, was a member of the Eastern bloc till the early 90's, and became a member of the European Union on 1st January 2007. It is a country where Nature is predominant: the two mountain groups where this tour takes place, Pirin and Rila, are National Parks with stockings of wolfs and bears. Winter is hard in the Bulgarian mountains, and snow falls are often heavy from December till April. The highest peak of Bulgaria is the Moussala, 9,596 feet.
Bulgarians love hiking in their mountains, but just a very few practice Ski touring (downhill skiing is much more popular). Therefore, you will have the chance to ski in wild mountains, meeting very few other back-country skiers, far from the classic busy ski tours of the Alps. This Ski Tour will allow you, during a crossing from North to South, to discover the National Parks and Mountain groups of Pirin and Rila, jewels of Nature, and to visit Rila Monastery, ranked in World Heritage by the UNESCO. On the last day of this program, you will have a half day free in Sofia to discover its architectural treasures. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Flight arrival in Sofia by early afternoon, private minibus transfer to Rila group (2 hours drive), ascent to Rilski Ezera hut (6,824 feet), close to the Seven Lakes : Sulzata, Okoto, Bubreka, Bliznaka, Botanicheskoto, Ribnoto, Dolnoto. Night by the hut. Duration of the stage : 2 hours. Difference of level : 1,526 feet up, 0 feet down. Day 2: Ascent of Dodov Vruh (8,730 feet) and Maliovitza (8,953 feet). Descent to Maliovitza hut (6,873 feet). Night by the hut. Duration of the stage : 5 hours and a half. Difference of level: 3,658 feet up, 3,609 feet down. Day 3: ascent to Goliam Kupen (8,960 feet), from which one can see the whole Rila mountain range. Superb descent to Rila Monastery, more than 5,000 vertical feet, skiing down the 35 degrees inclination "White Gully". In the afternoon, visit of Rila's Monastery, ranked in World Heritage by the UNESCO. Night in lodge close to the monastery. Duration of the stage : 6 hours. Difference of level : 2,434 feet up, 5,545 feet down. Day 4: Early morning transfer in private minibus to the small ski resort of Dobrinishte, close to Bansko, in Pirin mountain range (2 hours drive). The chairlifts bring us at Besbog (7,339 feet). Ascent of Polejan (9,350 feet) and Gazei (9,058 feet). Descent to Demianitza hut (6,099 feet). Night by the hut. Duration of the stage: 5 hours. Difference of level: 2,657 feet up, 3,898 feet down. Day 5: We go up through nice pine forests till the Vassilashki Ezera natural amphitheater. Ascent of small and high Todorka peaks (8,898 feet/ 9,009 feet). We ski down to Bunderitza hut (5,925 feet) where one can see the oldest Epicea pine tree in the World, aged 1,300 years. Transfer in private minibus to Bansko ski resort (45 minutes drive). Night in hotel in Bansko. Duration of the stage: 5 hours. Difference of level: 3,609 feet up, 3,783 feet down. Day 6: Early morning private minibus transfer back to Bunderitza hut (45 minutes drive). Ascent to Bunderishka Porta pass (8,251 feet). Fantastic descent through mountain pastures and forests till Iane Sandanski (3,986 feet), not very far from Greece. Duration of the stage : 4 hours and a half. Difference of level : 2,326 feet up, 4,265 feet down. In the afternoon, private minibus transfer to Sofia, with a stop by Melnik and her pink sand towers, where one can drink the best wine of Bulgaria. Night in hotel in Sofia.
