Note: Taxi expense from the airport to the hotel is not included.

Day 2: Altiplano and Atacama Desert - Santiago

Early in the morning take a flight to Calama. Upon arrival you will be transferred to San Pedro de Atacama. In the afternoon, take sometime to explore the town and think about the activities you want to do the following days. An important thing to remember is that San Pedro lies at an average of 7,900 ft (2,407 meters) above sea level and visitors often experience mild altitude sickness (dizziness, lethargy and headaches).

As for the climate, it is extremely dry and mild. Daytime temperatures range between 25-30 degrees Celsius (77-86°F) during the summer (December to February) and 18-25 degrees Celsius (64-77°F) during the winter (June to August). At night, the temperature can drop below zero and can reach as low as -10°C (14°F) in the winter. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 3: Altiplano and Atacama Desert

Today, we recommend starting with Valle de la Luna - the legendary moon valley surrounded by volcanic peaks that cascade as far as the eye can see. The large stone walls resemble those of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Almost all tours include watching the sunset which you shouldn't miss!

Day 4: Altiplano and Atacama Desert

Tours we recommend doing today are:

1. Altiplanic Lagoons. In this excursion you will see the largest salt flat in Chile which holds the largest flamingo reserves in the country (the National Flamingo Reserve); the Miscanti and Miñiques lakes, located at 4,220 meters above see level. On the way back, travel through Socaire, a pre-Columbian town known today for its typical Atacama cuisine.

2. Laguna Cejar (Cejar Lagoon) located 20 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama (2,300 meters above sea level) in the middle of the Salt Deposit of Atacama. The lagoon has offers extremely beautiful scenery and the possibility to bathe in waters as salty as those of the Dead Sea.

3. Astrology Tour: if it is a clear night, a must do! They allow people without any prior knowledge of the sky to understand it and discover a new world, our universe.

Overnight at a hotel.

Day 5: Altiplano and Atacama Desert
Today we recommend doing one of the following tours:

1. Geysers del Tatio: in this tour you will see some of the highest geysers in the world! It's also the third-largest geyser site on Earth, with over 80 active ones. As the geysers are located at 4,200m above sea level please consider the following things: 1) Temperatures can be terribly cold (-5ºC -15ºC) so please prepare accordingly; 2)the altitude, coupled to a steep and winding road, can easily cause height-sickness.

2. Monjes de la Pacana (Pacana Monks): San Pedro's best-kept secret! It is well above 4,500m so consider it carefully. In this tour visit some peculiar stone formations, obsidian quarries, stone towers called 'Catedrales', and the huge Tara salt lake. The landscape is stunning!

Overnight at a hotel.
