Evolving side-by-side with the motorcycle itself, the TT was been the world’s premier motorcycle race for many decades. It is now one of a handful of events still run on public roads, and, as the oldest organized motorcycle race in the world, an event that sits high on most rider’s “bucket list.”
To the Peaks District. The TT Tarry is a great way to check that event off the list! Beginning in Manchester the tour includes great riding from day one. Café-racing enthusiasts will be able to add another tick to the bucket list with a visit to the Cat & Fiddle, a pub on the well known road by the same name. Indeed, this is one of England’s best known motorcycle roads, but it is only one of the great roads in the area.
Once the tour departs the Greater Manchester area is necessary to decide on the day’s pursuit - history, nature, riding or sightseeing! The rides to the first overnight in Harrogate offer the options to visit Leeds or York, or to spend more time on the great roads in the Peak District National Park.
And the Yorkshire Dales. Following a pleasant overnight in Harrogate we head to the Dales. Fans of the James Herriot series “All Creatures Great and Small” will recognize the terrain and some of our stops. To those unfamiliar with the area, prepare for a treat! The expansive views unique to the Dales are quite special, and there is plenty of time to explore it in depth.
Regardless of the route, rural towns, small roads, and generally open countryside mark the entire ride to Morecambe Bay and our overnight in Heysham.
Arrival Douglas, IOM! With an afternoon ferry to catch, our riders, and hundreds of others, begin to gather at the docks. The excitement begins to build, as we are now on our way to the Isle of Man. Being part of the thousand riders loading onto the ferry is quite an experience!
Upon arrival in Douglas the thousand merge into the ten thousand already there. More will arrive on each ship, and the event – the spectacle that is the TT week – will be underway!
Our five nights near Douglas are spent in an excellent hotel used by many of the racing teams. It is quite likely that you may have breakfast with a man who will soon be traveling around the Island as average speeds well over 120 mph!
We could go on and on about the TT week, but if you have read this far, you know that it is the World’s premier road-racing event, and you know why you are thinking about the adventure!
Weather permitting we will have the opportunity to see 2 evening practice sessions, and the Superbike, Sidecar A, Superstock, and Supersport 1 races. And we will be there for Mad Sunday, when amateurs try their hand on the famous mountain course.
Departing from Douglas, the best is yet to come. Eventually it is time to leave the Island and sail back to Heysham. On great routes with challenging roads we head into Scotland for a double overnight near Edinburgh. On the free day riders may head to the Lochs, history buffs to the city, hikers to the hills. No doubt many of us will be stopping at a newsstand to see what the latest TT results are!
Heading south from Scotland the route takes us through the Lakes District, with an overnight in Windemere. This beautiful area has some of England’s steepest passroads, and quaintest villages. From the first to the last day the TT Tarry is all about motorcycling – from gentle touring to brutal, unbelievable road racing.
