Peru, a land of stark contrast and astounding beauty is the leading South American destination in which to enjoy both the snow-capped Andes and tropical Amazon rainforest. Our highly comprehensive Classic Peru tour includes the most important archaeological site in South America, the magical and mysterious Machu Picchu where we will marvel at undoubtedly one of the finest architectural achievements of the New World. At the scenic Huacarpay Lakes, surrounded by Inca and pre-Inca ruins, we will seek a wide variety of Andean waterfowl and other high altitude birds, including the magnificent Andean Condor. Descending the Andean slopes, we then bird through temperate zones and montane cloud forest, offering chances for an incredible variety of exceptional and endemic birds, including Cerulean-capped and Yungas Manakins, White-rumped Hawk, Montane Solitary Eagle, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Crested and Golden-headed Quetzals, Andean Motmot, Blue-banded Toucanet, Olive-backed and Montane Woodcreepers, Spotted Barbtail, the outrageous Amazonian Umbrellabird, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Inca Flycatcher, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer and Peruvian Piedtail. We also visit an Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek site where up to twenty males sometimes congregate, to watch the strange mating dance of these spectacular birds! With persistence, night birding in this area might yield the uncommon Napo and Rufescent Screech Owls, Rufous-banded Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar and possibly even Andean Potoo. In the mighty Amazon Basin the list of potential avian highlights is enormous, and in a remarkably short space of time we will be privy to a mouth-watering selection of showy South American species. Continuing into the depths of the Amazon, we will explore the overwhelming Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world, spending several fabulous days in this avian wonderland. The number of star birds here is again mind boggling (over 1000 species have been recorded!), with stellar potentials including Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Manu Antbird, Elusive Antpitta, Razor-billed Curassow, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Pavonine Quetzal, Purus Jacamar, Sunbittern, Sungrebe and Agami Heron, to name but a few! Other wildlife abounds, including 13 species of monkey and chances for Brazilian Tapir, Collared and White-lipped Peccaries and even Jaguar.
