Best of Rota Vicentina it’s a long course trail, mixing an inland route with coastal scenic trails. It’s a great experience where you will find authentic rural culture and a surprisingly wild coastline!

Program and Lodging:

Day 1: Welcome at airport or hotel in Lisbon.
Private transfer from Lisbon to Matinha (2h).

Day 2: Matinha to Porto Covo. Inland Hiking day (15km, +100m).
As you leave Matinha you’ll go through a the beautiful natural forest of the area, dominated by cork oaks. In this forest you’ll be able to find more than 150 different species of plant!. Enjoy the perfume of wild herbs such as Lavender, Thyme, Calamintha or Rosemary. Approaching the coast you will walk on the coastal plain, and you reach some cultivated fields. Ground nesting birds, nest in the cereal fields. Arrive at the coast where you will find two fortresses: one on the island and one on the shore. These coastal fortifications were the result of need to defend the coast from the pirates! Arrive to the typical and cozy village of Porto Covo.

Day 3: Porto Covo to Vila Nova Milfontes. Coastal Hiking day (19km, +300m).
This will be a long but rewarding walking day though. Leave Porto Covo and walk along the vast sand dunes area of Ilha do Pessegueiro. Up to the cliffs cross the beautiful beaches of Aivados and Malhão beaches and discover small deserted coves that will surprise you. You will see the first White Stork who nests on the cliffs on this region! Cross beautiful cliffs with incredible rock formations and sand dunes before reaching Vila Nova de Milfontes.

Day 4: Vila Nova Milfontes to Almograve. Coastal Hiking day (15km, +300m).
Leave Milfontes crossing river Mira by boat with stunning views of the river’s mouth, the small town beside it and the natural vegetation that covers the local hillsides. Walk along the Atlantic Ocean and later on go inland crossing by some rural countryside. Enter the little village of Longueira (Almograve) and get to your today’s charming guest house.

Day 5: Almograve to Touril. Coastal Hiking day (18km, +350m)
Return to the cliffs and cross a beautiful area where your will walk by colorful sand dunes and discover small fishing harbors. This coastline is the only place in the world where Storks nest on the cliffs and rocky islands! Take the time to stop at Cabo Sardão’s lighthouse. This lighthouse has a unique characteristic in that it was built the wrong way round. The entry door is facing the ocean and the lighthouse is facing inland! Continue on the trail on top of high cliffs arrive to another charming guest house where you will stay.

Day 6: Touril to Brejão. Coastal Hiking day (15km, +350m)
It’s a beautiful walk along the cliffs with great views, heading to Zambujeira do Mar a very know village from the region inside this Natural Park we´ve been crossing. Find desert little beaches with nearly no access and some with the access of ropes used by the local fisherman to catch sea-food. Discover nests of storks all along the coastline as we walk through the narrow trails made by the fisherman. Another spectacular day by the cliffs of this wild coast!

Day 7: Brejão to Odeceixe. Coastal Hiking day (12km, +300m)
As we leave the Guest House behind we head to the beach named after the greatest Portuguese singer of Fado, Amalia Rodrigues. Along this stretch of coast it is interesting to take a close look at the cliffs with their sedimentary rugged rocks formations. This day is also marked by the stork’s nests. Today a great spot with breathtaking views over Odeceixe beach, a singular spot on this whole hike!. You will reach Odeceixe and cross the and river that separates the two southern regions of Portugal, Alentejo and then the Algarve. Odeceixe is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

Day 8: Odeceixe to Rogil. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (12km, +300m)
Start walking side by side with the Seixe river and the wetlands till you get to the south side of Odeceixe beach. Go up to the cliffs and enjoy the superb views of the beach, Follow the trail by the cliffs over the Ocean. Close to the end cross inland and get to the water channel, at João Roupeiro hamlet, you’ll be in the section of the Historical Way. Continue along the canal and arrive at Rogil, your village for today.

Day 9: Rogil to Aljezur. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (11km, +300m)
Return to the water channel and follow it crossing a farmland area with sweet potatoes, maize, peanuts and tomatoes. Arrive to a pine forest and follow a dirt road getting close to the Ocean. Walk along the coast and cliffs till you discover a beautiful beach and valley – Amoreira! Get back to the inland flat plateau and from the top follow the beautiful valley of the Amoreira river. Suddenly the medieval village of Aljezur and it Moorish castle emerges!

Day 10: Aljezur to Arrifana. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (16km, +400m)
Start going up to the top of the castle of Aljezur, from where you can take in the village, the flat fertile ground of the lowlands, and the creeks that wind through these fields with their magnificent galleries of poplars, alders, ash trees, willows and tamarisks! Going onde again to the Atlantic Ocean on this walk you’ll be passing by the beautiful beach and typical piscatorial village of Monte Clérigo. Walk by the coast, passing in the mythical Ponta da Atalaia, a fantastic promontory where we can see many ruins and excavations of an ancient Moorish fortress (Ribat) controlled by Ibn Qasî around 1150!

Day 11: Arrifana to Carrapateira. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (20km, +500m)
This is a gorgeous day: you will feel the power of the sea breaking over ancient cliffs! Cross amazing places like Canal beach, a secret surf spot where you will find plenty of stones, rounded by the constant erosion from the waves and tides. The route follow now a big wild area covered by cistus and lentiscus. Before arriving in Carrapateira, follow a trail with great views over the valley and the beach of Bordeira, and get to the village of Bordeira, where time seems to move slower. Stop for a cafe and a chat with whoever comes by the window or the doorstep!

Day 12: Carrapateira to Pedralva. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (18km, +400m)
Start another beautiful day going close to the river to the beach of Bordeira to appreciate how the sea has carved the sand into harmonious shapes that change with the seasons. Then follow along the coast trough “Carrapateira Pontal” an incredible peninsula where you will go across various viewpoints, with superb views of the escarpments. Get to the most famous spot for surfers and one of the most beautiful beaches of the region – Amado Beach! Go up through a beautiful Pine forest and discover a hidden valley inland where you will find a lost village – Pedralva, a typical and old village once abandoned and recovered as a hotel!

Day 13: Pedralva to Vila do Bispo. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (19km, +600m)
From Pedralva village, along the riverbanks, there are tamarisk, willow, ash and Portuguese oaks. On the drier slopes, cork oak, maritime and stone pines, oleaster and olive trees. On the steepest slopes you can admire the natural vegetation, virtually untouched by man, with dense scrub under the cover of cork trees. In this undergrowth arbutus, white heather, scotch heather, viburnum tinus, cistus, lentiscus, wild asparagus, laurel and furze are in abundance. On this day you go out of the Rota Vicentina to discover a fantastic beach and great black rock cliffs of Barriga beach!

Day 14: Vila do Bispo to Sagres. Coastal/Inland Hiking day (14km, +200m)
Today, you will be walking towards the south western most point of Europe. This is a magical place where one can almost hear the echoes of the voices of sailors and pilgrims. Find monumental cliffs, outstanding views over the coastline and a privileged area to watch the natural phenomenon of autumn bird migration. The name of this promontory ‘Sagres’ seems to be linked to its past sacred character, as a place of pilgrimage for believers of various religions throughout the ages.
Finally Finisterra - Cape St. Vincent, the magical and mythical place which signals the end of this journey along the Rota Vicentina!
