Day 1 20 to 40 miles
We start with a leisurely tour, by bicycle, of Historic Savannah and learn about the rich history of the city. In the afternoon, have your choice of strolling about and exploring the nooks and crannies of Georgia's oldest city or put in up to 42 miles on you bicycle in the environs of Savannah. This evening, we will all dine together and get to know fellow riders! Lodging is at the Planters Inn
Our adventure starts at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge! Offering over 15 miles of paved roads and trails you will explore many different habitats. Harris Neck consisting of 2,824 acres of salt marsh's, open fields, forested wetland and mixed hardwood/pine forest. Because of this great diversity in habitat, many species of birds are attracted to the refuge throughout the year. In the summer, thousands of egrets and herons nest in the freshwater ponds, while in the winter, waterfowl can be found feeding and resting on the refuge. After a picnic lunch at the refuge, you will have option of 15 to 30 miles of beautiful, country roads around Darien. This evening, relax on the deck of The Darien Waterfront Inn, overlooking the Altamaha River.
After a sumptuous breakfast at the Inn, we mix it up with a little multi-sport. We will kayak a section of the Altamaha River. Keep your eyes open! The river offers a chance to view wildlife from a different perspective. Lodging is at Ocean Inn & Suites in St. Simon
We continue to drift southward as we will bike to Jekyll Island. This has been a winter retreat for America's most elite families, the Pulitzers, Rockefellers and many others have looked to this lovely island as their escape. Cycle along the sand bars, stop and take in the historic district, and visit the fascinating Sea Turtle Sanctuary. Following lunch we will shuttle back to Savannah and say our good byes.
