Your tour starts in Bamako, Mali, from where you will be transferred to Segou, then to Mopti for a tour of the city and a sail on the Niger River. Then you will see the Great Mosque of Djenné, and afterwards you will drive across the Sahara desert to the legendary city of Timbuktu.
You will return to Mali's famous Dogon country, then two full days of sightseeing in Ouahigouya and Ouagadougou. Continue with a trip to Deux Bales National Park, then to Bobo Dioulasso, Sikasso (Mali) and finally back to Bamako, from where you will fly home.
Tour itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive Bamako, Mali by own flight arrangements. After clearing customs and immigration on your own you will be met and transfered to your hotel.
Day 2: Bamako - Segou
After breakfast you will be driven to Segou, to begin sightseeing including Sekoro village and the tomb of King Biton Coulibaly.
Day 3: Segou - Mopti & Niger River
After breakfast by car to Mopti for a tour of the city including the mosque, the port and the markets. Later enjoy a sunset sail on the Niger River in a traditional "pirogu" boat.
Day 4: Mopti - Djenne - Mopti
Today you have a day trip to Djenne to see the weekly market there as well as the Grand Mosque which is one of the world's largest mud brick buildings. Return to Mopti for overnight.
Day 5: Mopti - Timbuktu
Drive across the Sahara desert to the legendary city of Timbuktu. Overnight in Timbuktu.
Day 6: Timbuktu/Sahara Desert
Sightseeing in this fabled city includes the old mosques as well as the museum and markets. In the afternoon you have an excursion into the Sahara Desert by camel to visit a Tuareg camp. Here you can enjoy tea on the sand dunes with your hosts before returning to Timbuktu.
Day 7: Dogon country
Return drive across the Sahel to Mali's famous Dogon country. Overnight hotel in Bandiagara.
Day 8: Dogon country
Visit the Dogon village of Songo, renowned for its rock paintings and then on to Sangha for a walking tour of the villages in this area before going down to the village of Banani. Overrnight in a hotel in Sangha (We can arrange for you to see a traditional Dogon mask dance today if you like – please enquire).
Day 9: Dogon country - Ouahigouya
Leave the Dogon country with a drive through some lovely villages and cross to Ouahigouya in Burkina Faso. Overnight in Ouahigouya.
Day 10: Ouahigouya - Ouagadougou
Sightseeing in Ouahigouya capital of the old Yatenga kingdom includes the Yatenga Naba compound and King Kango's tomb. Then on to Ouagadougou where you will overnight.
Day 11: Ouagadougou
Full day tour of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital city, with visits to the Grand Market and the National Museum, also a visit to the crafts markets at the Artisans' Center where you will find all sorts of baskets, fabrics, masks etc.
Day 12: Ouagadougou - Deux Bales National Parc - Bobo Dioulasso
Continue today with a drive to Bobo Dioulasso en route visiting Sabou village with its totem crocodiles. Also visit Deux Bales National Park where you may see some elephants. Overnight at a hotel in Bobo Dioulasso.
Day 13: Bobo Dioulasso - Sikasso (Mali)
Tour of Bobo Dioulasso ("house of the Bobo merchants"), Burkina Faso's second largest city during which you will see the old mosque, the Museum, and the Kibidwe artisans' district. In the afternoon depart by car and cross back into Mali. Overnight at a hotel in Sikasso.
Day 14: Sikasso - Bamako
Sightseeing in Sikasso where you will see the remains of the Tata an ancient palisade that circled the city. Also visit the Mamelon which was the residence of the kings of Sikasso and a sacred site. In the afternoon travel by car to Bamako. Overnight in Bamako.
Day 15: Bamako - final departure
Time for some final sightseeing and shopping activities in Bamako, or just relax, before the evening transfer to the airport for your departure flight by own arrangements flight.
