One name, one symbol. Zugspitze belongs to the best known summits of the Alps and can be quite easily mounted by cable car. That is why we choose to walk around the Zugspitze massive, viewing it from different angles and exploring beautiful hiking territory. Adventurous and sensational crossing of gorges, thundering waters leaving unforgettable impressions. Idyllic alpine pastures and traditional “Brotzeit” the repast to sustain yourself during the hike are inseparable aspects of this hiking tour. On both sides of Wetterstein Massif you find pretty places for tranquil nights. Let’s go!
Route Character: Varied walking tour, requiring good basic stamina. You walk on well kept hiking paths and partly on forest roads. Any considerable changes in altitude are covered by transfers or cable car. Daily walking times of max. 5 comfortable hours. As far as possible each day also a more challenging option is offered, reaching into higher mountain territory.
Day 1: Individual journey to Garmisch Partenkirchen.
Day 2: Garmisch - gorge Partnachklamm – Klais – Train to Mittenwald
Wild and idyllic start of the day through the steep gorge Partnachklamm, where the water courses from Wetterstein massif meet. Afterwards walk across soft hills and alpine pastures to Klais. With the train to Mittenwald. Overnight Mittenwald. Distance: 15,15 km and approx. 5 hours walking time.
Day 3: Mittenwald - „Geisterklamm“ (Ghost Gorge) - Leutasch. To make the gorge passable the path was hewn with extreme precision into the rock and bold bridges cross up to 40 m above the water. Relax on a comfortable walk along the stream Leutascher Ache into the valley. Past small hamlets and flower meadows with Wetterstein Massif forming a stunning backdrop you walk into widening Leutasch Valley. Overnight Leutasch. Distance: 14 km and approx. 4 hours walking time.
Day 4: Rest Day or Walking tour to Seefeld. Today you are free either to relax or take a walk over little summits to the lakes in and around Seefeld. Return by public bus. Overnight Leutasch.
- Distance: 9 km and approx. 3 hours walking time.
- Distance: 11,5 km and approx. 4,5 hours walking time.
Day 5: Leutasch – alpine pasture Ehrwald – cable car - Ehrwald. Summer in Gaistal valley is blissful for the small light brown ponies and grey and brown cattle. We walk on Ganghofer (a local writer) path across the alpine pastures up to the crossing to Ehrwalder Alm – alpine pasture. Picture book scenery. Downhill by cable car. Overnight Ehrwald. Distance: 14 km and approx. 5 hours walking time.
Day 6: Ehrwald – Lake Eibsee – Train/Bus to Garmisch. Bit by bit we walk up to the foot of mount Zugspitze and famous scenic view on Lake Eibsee. The tour ends at the lovely lake with Zugspitz-Garmisch panorama. Simply beautiful. If you like you may take the cable car in Ehrwald to Mount Zugspitze or from Lake Eibsee. Return to Garmisch by train or bus. Distance: 13 km and approx. 4 hours walking time.
Day 7: Departure from Garmisch Partenkirchen.
