The Julian Alps has some wonderful ice-falls of varying length and degree of difficulty and so are ideal for beginners and experts alike. The ice falls normally start to form around end of November. The best ice fall climbing months are between December and February. Most ice-falls have easy access with an hour's walk from the road. Ice-climbing is suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers. No previous experience is required although some basic knowledge of rope skills and abseiling together with rock climbing experience is useful. We will pair climbers according to their abilities and ambitions. Good general fitness and stamina are essential as well as commitment and determination. Climbing related training at your local climbing wall or gym is good training and preparation for ice-climbing.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Fly to Ljubljana. At the airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to Kranjska Gora and checked into your hotel. There will be an initial meeting with the guide in the hotel in the evening - an opportunity to meet the rest of the group and discuss the plans for the week.
Day 2: Warm up on the small ice-fall in the Mlacca Gorge. The ice-fall here is about 30m. and refresh technique and belay of ice climbing.
Day 3: A day tour. Ice climbing in Tamar valley. There are many ice falls length 80 – 120m. Return to our hotel in Kranjska Gora.
Day 4: A day tour to Trenta valley. Climbing on the Zapotok ice falls which are hidden at the end of the Zadnja Trenta valley. Return to our hotel in Kranjska Gora.
Day 5: A day tour. Climbing in Mount Prisank. Return to our hotel in Kranjska Gora.
Day 6: A day tour into Italy to climb on some amazing ice-falls in the Western Julian Alps Return to our hotel for our last night in Kranjska Gora.
Day 7: Transfer to Ljubljana and have the morning for sightseeing/ shopping. Fly back to the UK in the late afternoon. You will travel by private minibus to the ice-climbing venues. They are all within a 50km radius from your base in Kranjska Gora.
