These ancient Etruscan religious sites, temples, ‘lost cities’ and other sacred structures, include places of worship carved into the mountain side, dolmens integrated with the solar calendar and abandoned prehistoric cities. These places were the original locations on which later civilizations, for example the Knights of Templar, built their holy shrines. We will see how later cultures integrated these places into their sacred lexicons in the wildness of the Tuscan Maremma.
Our base is a charming ‘agriturismo’ in Sovana, a town in the heart of the Maremma that offers unique local dining. From here we will depart each day to discover holy sites of both the Etruscans and the Templar Knights to learn the language of this holy architecture, an architecture that strives to link man to the four elements and to the entire universe.
From the Sovana Cathedral adorned with figures and symbols of the Zodiac to the Etruscan Temple, Poggio dell’ Uovo, where, to this very day, during the solstice, the sun penetrates the many tiny openings carved into the rock and illuminates the holy alters within. During this tour, we will have a chance to meet some of the scholars and researcher personnel who discovered these important sites.
You will also not want to miss the opportunity to bath in the many rivers and thermal baths in this area, such as the warm and spectacular waterfalls of Saturnia. Also and hour away by car, is the Parco Regionale della Maremma, with its unspoiled Mediterranean seaside.
The average length of this tour is 1 week but the programme’s length can be customized. Day by Day programme available on request.
