Participants should have completed at least 1 multi-day ski tour or at least some day tours and be familiar with the technical aspects of ski touring. You need to be a competent off-piste skier, experienced in all kinds of snow conditions, preferably able to do parallel turns in powder snow, and linked stem turns in more difficult snow.
As always for ski touring, fitness is important. On most days you will be ascending on skis for at least 3-4 hours which requires excellent physical stamina. You are advised to prepare yourself well in advance by regular hill walking and ideally some skiing.
We'll travel to Kiruna, the northernmost airport in Sweden. From here it is a 2-hour journey by road or rail to our base in Riksgränsen. The itinerary is left flexible so that the guide(s) can choose the best options depending on the snow and weather conditions and preferences of the group.
Riksgränsen has plenty to offer in terms of off-piste and day tours and we can also travel to Narvik in nearby Norway. On 1-2 days we may travel up to 1.5 hours to the trailheads. On most days you'll be touring for 3-5 hours and enjoy 1500 vertical meters of descent.
A typical day - the ascent of Spanstind.
Leave the hotel for an hour long scenic journey by road to the trailhead. Skis can be attached in the car park. The climb starts gently with just a few short, steep sections. The final climb up to the summit requires some effort but once on the top you'll really appreciate the achievement - the 360 degree views are fantastic - with the fjords glistening far below! We'll enjoy the moment before the 1000 m vertical descent back to the car. A round trip of 5-6 hours.
