North India is the largest region in India. From the high peaks of the Himalaya it embraces the great flat plains of the Ganga Valley and the upland plateaus of the northern Peninsula. This enormously diverse landscape is home to an equally wide range of peoples, from those of Mongolian and Tibetan stock in the far north to the tribal peoples of Madhya Pradesh to the south. Delhi, centrally located in the region, is the start and finishing point for the tour, and is India's fastest growing city, with the style and facilities of a sophisticated capital.
This itinerary takes you on a fascinating journey through time as you explore the ancient Mogul history as you travel through Rajasthan and the holy sites of Uttar Pradesh, including the Taj Mahal and the pilgrimage site of Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges. It is Uttar Pradesh that contains much of India's contemporary cultural and religious life, as well as the country's capital city, New Delhi, and India's holiest river, the Ganges.
The other half of the tour is in wonderful Rajasthan, whose many princely states, impressive forts and magnificent palaces, set in the often stark surroundings of the Thar Desert, evoke uniquely colorful images of medieval India. Here highlights include the romantic city of Udaipur, Jaisalmer, the walled city straight out of the Arabian Nights; and a private camel safari that even includes your own accompanying musicians for a night camping beneath the desert stars.
