For the intrepid traveler, a journey through rural Thailand and Laos offers an unparalleled glimpse of the beauty and history of old Southeast Asia. The splendors of Thailand, from opulent palaces to idyllic floating markets, are well known. However, the culture and land of Laos has remained beyond the tourist itinerary, and today Laos remains one of Asia's least developed and least known countries.
From the green, fertile lowlands to the rugged Annamite highlands, legendary Lao hospitality and natural scenery have survived decades of war and restrictive politics, to provide travelers with a charming 'old world' treat.
After having visited Bangkok, the ancient Thai capital of Ayudhaya and the River Kwai region, you can follow a rarely traveled route east through Thailand to the Mekong River and into Laos. Here, in this small land-locked country, the people continue to live as they have for centuries.
In Laos, you'll want to visit the "petit Paris" capital of Vientiane, that sits on the shores of the Mekong River, before traveling on to the old city of Luang Phrabang, a beautiful town with almost as many temples as people. Then, board a river boat for a 2-day journey further up the Mekong River, passing between the mountains of northern Laos, before crossing through the Golden Triangle back into Thailand. There you can explore the fascinating tribal cultures of northern Thailand on overnight treks in northern Thailand, hiking, rafting and even riding elephants in the jungle. Overnights can be spent in local tribal villages.
Later, after enjoying the comfort and diversity of Chiang Mai, fly south to conclude your adventure in Bangkok, on the beaches in southern Thailand, or continue on to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
