The islands of Down East Maine spark a passion for exploration. At the heart lies Acadia National Park, an island of rolling mountains, tranquil coves and white beaches. Here, picturesque fishing villages tell the history of people intimately connected to the sea while wind swept beaches and majestic pine forests recount the history of nature. On our Acadia walking journey we explore remote trails, sweeping vistas, hard-working fishing ports and hidden summer retreats.
Highlights:
- Artisans and galleries; lighthouse and lobster rolls;
- Strolling the historic carriage trails of Acadia National Park;
- Interpretive ride on the Isle of Haut mail boat;
- Afternoon tea and popovers at Jordon Pond House;
- Private ride on a lobster boat through the "Maine Archipelago".
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 & 2 - Deer Isle, Stonington & Isle Au Haut
We begin on Deer Isle as we trace the island's 2000 year old history. A short hike through the mossy forest of Barred Island Preserve promises a glimpse of eagles, ospreys, and seals. Next, we ride the Mail Boat from the fishing village of Stonington to Isle au Haut. We follow the less-traveled hiking trails of Acadia National Park through a mix of wooded uplands and rocky beaches to Western Head. Dinner tonight at a classic "Lobster Pound" includes the freshest of Maine chowder, lobster and steamers. Accommodation: two nights at Pilgrims Inn, a National Landmark.
Day 3 - Jericho Bay & Beech Mountain
We join Captain Bill aboard his lobsterboat Nigh Duck for a ride among the lighthouses and lobster buoys of Jericho Bay and the Casco Passage before arriving in the sleepy town of Bass Harbor. After stopping for lunch in the village of Southwest Harbor, we head to the trails over Beech Mountain, where we are treated to spectacular views of Mount Desert Island's "quiet side". Wind down with the sunset over Northeast Harbor as seen from our inn's wrap-around porch.
Day 4, 5 & 6 - Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park
Start the day with a short seaside hike or spend the morning in the galleries and shops of Northeast Harbor. In the afternoon, relax by the pool or take a stroll in the nearby Azalea and Thuya Gardens before heading out to explore the bustling town of Bar Harbor. A beautiful walk along Ocean Path brings us to Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole, with views of the open Atlantic and the Schoodic Peninsula across Frenchman Bay. After enjoying a picnic at Sand Beach, we head inland to saunter along the park's historic carriage roads. Arriving at the Jordan Pond House, we enjoy the tradition of afternoon tea, popovers, and strawberry jam on the lawn. Finally, before parting ways, we enjoy a morning hike up Cadillac Mountain, and are rewarded panoramic views of the park and all that we've explored. Accommodation: three nights at Asticou Inn, a handsomely restored property perched above the waters of Northeast Harbor.
