Ethiopia’s proximity to the equator and great habitat diversity means it has one of the richest avifauna in Africa. Taking in to account birds that were first recorded in Ethiopia after 1971, or have only been described since then, a total count of around 850 birds is a realist estimate. It is quite possible that further species awaits discovery in the little-known forests of the south and west, or elsewhere- a new and presumably endemic species of nightjar was discovered as recently as 1992 in the very accessible Nech sar national Park.

Day 1: Arrive Addis; city tour; shopping
Day 2: Drive to the Ethiopian middle rift system, stopping at Lakes Koka & Ziway for water birds like
Day 3: Early in the morning, leave for the Abijata-Shalla National Park and Keep on driving to Lake Awassa
Day 4: Full day birding around Lake Awassa & the "Tikur Weha" forest area
Day 5: Drive to the southern town of Yabello
Day 6: Full day birding at Yavello Sanctuary
Day 7: Drive to the town of Mega
Day 8: On the way to Negele, explore the forest around the town of Arero
Days 9-10: Spend 2 days exploring the diversified environment around Negele
Day 11: Continue to Goba and the Sanetti Plateau
Day 12: Full day birding in Bale National Park
Day 13: Drive to Wondo Genet with birding on the way
Day 14: Full day birding around Wondo Genet
Day 15: Drive back to Addis; afternoon leisure or shopping; cultural evening out
