Carnival in Trinidad begins in January and lasts well beyond Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. In January thousands of Trini musicians begin practicing for the Panorama competitions. It’s guaranteed you’ll never forget the first time you step into a panyard and hear a full steelband in action. Over 100 players on some 400 various types of Pans (steel drums). The Pan, the only acoustical, musical instrument invented in the 20th century, was originally made out of 55-gallon oil drums in 1939. The science of tuning has advanced far and now produces astounding sound effects in a range of over five octaves. The Calypso Tents open in January and nightly they present current Calypsos with casts of thousands. Perhaps no other art form defines Trinidad so well as Calypso, a pungent combination of sexual, social and political, oral history and often risqué’ satire. All set in a lively rhythm that makes you want to dance! Carnival Week: Jan. 30 to Feb. 6, 2008. Notes: - Single room $50.00
