Also visit the Eagle Encounters bird of prey rehabilitation, education, conservation and eco-tourism centre. Their long term vision is to do their part in preserving the eco-environment by protecting birds of prey through the release of prime rehabilitable candidates and is a non profitable organization. Other recreation facilities include walking trails and horse riding. Wine tasting and a wine centre is open to all wine enthusiasts!
Well known restaurants such as Moyo's at Spier, traditional African cuisine, Figaro's, Jonkershuis and Terrior at Kleine Zalze. There is also a Spier Deli, a delightful shop offering an array of spices, homemade jams, while the delicious aroma of fresh bread wafts over you. There is a mouth-watering dessert display, a selection of cold meats, cheese, an extensive variety of salads.
Wine has been produced on this family-owned wine estate since 1695 - Kleine Zalze. The combination of exceptional terroir, situated on perfect aspects along the Stellenbosch Mountains, provide the basic ingredients for their wines. Stellenbosch is approximately 1 hour from Cape Town City Centre so, include a visit to the city or other nearby attractions during your stay. Stellenbosch is also a great base to explore many of the wine routes, including Franschoek and Paarl.
Some History ....Historic Spier has many colorful stories to tell. Settlement of the land dates back to the early Stone Age and today implements from that era are still to be found scattered across the estate. Towards the end of the 17th century, when the first European settlers reached the area, the land was already populated by Khoi cattle farmers who migrated seasonally between the West Coast and what is now known as the Stellenbosch district.
