The Simien Mountains present perhaps the most dramatic mountain scenery in Africawith fantastic crags,pinnacles and flat topped mountains which tower over gorges,river valleys and plains. There are many peaks with Ras Dashen being the highest in the country and fourth highest in Africa, at 4620 metres.
While trekking in the Simiens visitors can see the endemic Gelada or bleeding heart baboon, the Walia Ibex, Simien Wolf,Rock Hyrax,and many endemic birds. You will trek through alpine meadows carpeted with flowers and punctuated with the tall spiky kniphofia or "red hot pokers." You can go for a day trek or if you wish to climb Ras Dashen you should allow eight days. The Simien Mountains can easliy be combined with a tour of the Historic Route.
Tour Itinerary
Day1: Fly to Gonder, after check in to a hotel; visit the 17th century castle compound, the swimming pool of king Fasil, Churches of Debre Birihan and Qusquam. O/n in a hotel.
Day2: Drive to Sankaber campsite; en route stop at Debark for trekking arrangement. O/n camping.
Day3: After breakfast trek to Gheech viewing the Panorama of the Simen Mountains, viewing the Gelada baboon birds and other animals. O/n camping.
Day4: After breakfast trek to Immet Gogo for panoramic view and game viewing. then, back to Gheech campsite for over night.
Day5: After breakfast trek to Chenek campsite for over night camping through the gorgeous terrain.
Day6: After breakfast trek to Hambico for over night stay in a camp.
Day7: After breakfast trek to Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia (4620m.) and come back to Hambico. O/n camping.
Day8: After breakfast trek to Chenek .O/n camping.
Day9: Drive from Chenek to Gonder and fly to Addis.
