Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Bucharest. Arrive in Bucharest, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon is at leisure. In the evening meet your fellow travelers and Tour Director at the welcome cocktail and dinner.
Day 2: Visit the Paris of the East. Today you will visit Bucharest, "The Paris of the East". Admire the large boulevards and the villas and palaces along them. Visit the Ceausescu Palace (the second largest building in the world) and find out more about communism in Romania. After a lunch in one of Bucharest's most famous restaurants, discover the Old Town. In the evening have dinner in beautifully set restaurant.
Day 3: Enter Transylvania-Sibiu-Cultural Capital of Europe 2007. The tour takes you today to Transylvania. First visit in Curtea de Arges the beautiful 16th century monastery, where the Romanian Royal family is buried. Have lunch in a local restaurant. After a drive through the beautiful Olt-Valley you will arrive in Sibiu, the cultural capital of Europe in 2007! Discover on a walking-tour the Old Town of Sibiu, which is beautifully preserved and renovated. You will see why it was chosen the Cultural Capital of Europe. In the evening you are invited to dine in a farmhouse in the small village of Sibiel. Taste some delicious Romanian specialties.
Day 4: Sibiu - Alba Iulia– Cluj. In the morning drive deeper into Transylvania. Visit the city of Alba Iulia. The citadel of Alba Iulia was built in Vauban-style in the 18th century, when Transylvania was a part of the Habsburg Empire. Visit one of the oldest Catholic Churches in this part of Europe. Have lunch and drive afterwards to the largest city in Transylvania, also the most important university centre, Cluj. The Old Town is dominated by the St. Michael cathedral and the statue of the great Hungarian king Matias Corvinus. Dinner will be served in the hotel.
Day 5: Cluj - Targu Mures – Sighisoara. The journey today brings you first to the town of Targu Mures. Discover this multi ethnic city: half of the population is Romanian, half Hungarian. Visit the center built in Art-Nouveau style. The Palace of Culture will impress you for sure. Have lunch in a local restaurant and drive then further to Sighisoara, an UNESCO site. This is one of the best preserved citadels in Europe. On a walking-tour explore this romantic town, with its narrow streets, colorful houses and medieval towers and bastions. Your hotel lies in the heart of the citadel!
Day 6: Sighisoara and the fortified church in Biertan. After breakfast drive to Biertan, a beautiful medieval Saxon village, also an UNESCO site. Visit the imposing fortified Lutheran church and explore the village. You will have the opportunity to get an idea or rural life in Romania. Come back to Sighisoara for lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure to discover more of the citadel.
Day 7: Viscri and Brasov. Drive through the beautiful hills of Transylvania and arrive in the village of Viscri. The fortified Saxon church has been restored with the help of Prince's Charles Mihai Eminescu Trust. Prince Charles even bought and restored a house here in Viscri, the British Royal Family having also roots in Transylvania, the Hungarian noble family of Kemeny! Drive further and arrive in Brasov, one of the richest cities in Transylvania. Discover the Black Church, the biggest Gothic cathedral in Eastern Europe and the beautiful baroque Old Town. In the evening enjoy dinner and a folklore show in a restaurant on the main marketplace.
Day 8: Prejmer - Bran – Brasov. In the morning visit near Brasov the town of Prejmer, founded by the Teutonic knights in the 13th century. Afterwards drive to Bran Castle and find out more about Vlad the Impaler and the legend of Dracula. At noon have lunch in Bran and come back to Brasov. After lunch explore more of Brasov on your own. The city has much to offer. In the evening you will dine in a former bastion of the city, set on a hill. The Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra will perform for you!
Day 9: Brasov - Sinaia – Bucharest. Leave Transylvania and stop in Sinaia. The Peles Castle in Sinaia is the former summer-residence of the Romanian Royal family. You will be impressed by its decorated rooms. Have lunch near the castle and arrive in the afternoon in Bucharest. In the evening join the farewell dinner in Bucharest most elegant restaurant.
Day 10: Good bye, Romania! Your Transylvania tour ends today. Transfer to the airport is included.
