Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Bucharest, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel. This afternoon is at leisure. In the evening meet your fellow travelers and Tour Director at the welcome cocktail and dinner. (D)
Day 2: Today you will visit Bucharest, "The Paris of the East". It once had a large and important Jewish community. Nowadays there are around 4000 Jews living in Bucharest. Visit the Choral Synagogue, built in 1843. In the Great Synagogue, meet a representative of the Community and talk with him about Romanian Jewry. A great Jewish site is the State Yiddish Theatre, still open and performing. Visit also the Jewish Museum, set in an old synagogue in the former Jewish district. Have lunch in one of Bucharest's famous restaurants and visit in the afternoon the Ceausescu Palace and find out more about communism in Romania. Admire the large boulevards and the villas and palaces along them. Enjoy dinner in a restaurant beautifully set on the shore of a lake. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 3: In the morning drive into the region of Moldavia, where the majority of Romanian Jews were living. Stop in Bacau to visit the only remaining synagogue and also have lunch. In the afternoon arrive in the city of Piatra Neamt, where you will find the only wooden synagogue in Romania, from the 18th century. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Meet a representative of the small Jewish Community of Piatra Neamt and visit the wooden synagogue. After the visit, leave Piatra Neamt and drive towards Iasi (Iassy), a city which before WWII had 127 synagogues! Have lunch and enjoy a panoramic tour of the city. Check into your centrally located hotel, designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Shabbat dinner together (B, L, D)
Day 5: In the morning you can join the Shabbat service in the Great Synagogue from the 17th century. Afterwards, enjoy a peaceful Shabbat or join you tour leader on a walking tour of Iasi. It was a city in which Jewish life flourished. Half of the population was Jewish. The first Yiddish Theatre in the world was established here by Abraham Goldfaden, before he migrated to New York. You can also visit the Palace of Culture and its museums or walk along the boulevards of this vibrating city. (B)
Day 6: After breakfast, visit the Jewish Cemetery in Iasi, one of the most important in Romania. The journey brings you today to Bucovina, where you will find Jewish traces everywhere. On the way to Gura Humorului (Gura Humora) stop in Harlau and admire the decorated ceiling and frescoes in the synagogue. Visit also the town of Botosani and find out more about the Jews of this city. Visit the local synagogue and have lunch. In the late afternoon you will arrive in Gura Humorului and check into your comfortable hotel. (B, L, D)
Day 7: Discover Jewish Bucovina and admire some of Europe's most beautiful landscapes. Drive to Radauti (Radautz) and visit the local synagogue. In Siret, very near to the Ukrainian border explore one of the most interesting Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Europe. It was declared also a historical monument and is protected by the Ministry of Culture. Learn about the different symbols on the gravestones. Drive further to Dorohoi. Have lunch and search afterwards for Jewish traces in this town, which was once a Jewish shtetl. Come back to Gura Humorului. (B, L, D)
Day 8: The Romanian sites of Bucovina are also extremely interesting. Today you can choose to make research on your own or visit the Painted Monasteries. The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are one of the most valuable cultural treasures of Eastern Europe and are included in the UNESCO Heritage. The interior, as well the exterior walls are fully covered with Byzantine frescos, telling biblical and historical stories. Visit today the most beautifully preserved monasteries in Voronet, Moldovita and Sucevita. Enjoy an evening at leisure. (B)
Day 9: Early in the morning drive to Suceava and embark on a short flight to Bucharest. Check into your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure. Your Tour Director will tell you what there is still to see in Bucharest. In the evening join the farewell dinner in Bucharest's most elegant restaurant. (B, D)
Day 10: Good-bye, Romania! Your transfer to the airport is included. (B)
