Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Bucharest, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon is at leisure. In the evening meet your fellow travelers and Tour Director at the welcome cocktail and dinner.
Day 2: Today you will visit Bucharest, "The Paris of the East". Admire the large boulevards and the villas and palaces along them. Visit the Ceausescu Palace (the second largest building in the world) and find out more about communism in Romania. After a lunch in one of Bucharest's most famous restaurants, discover the Old Town. In the evening have dinner in beautifully set restaurant.
Day 3: The tour takes you today to Transylvania. First visit in Curtea de Arges the beautiful 16th century monastery, where the Romanian Royal family is buried. Have lunch in a local restaurant. After a drive through the beautiful Olt-Valley you will arrive in Sibiu, the cultural capital of Europe in 2007! Discover on a walking-tour the Old Town of Sibiu, which is beautifully preserved and renovated. You will see why it was chosen the Cultural Capital of Europe. In the evening you are invited to dine in a farmhouse in the small village of Sibiel. Taste some delicious Romanian specialties.
Day 4: After breakfast drive to Biertan, a beautiful medieval Saxon village. Visit the imposing fortified Lutheran church and explore the village. Drive afterwards to Sighisoara, an UNESCO site. This is one of the best preserved citadels in Europe. On a walking-tour explore this romantic town, with its narrow streets, colorful houses and medieval towers and bastions. Have lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Your hotel lies in the heart of the citadel!
Day 5: Explore more of Transylvania. In the morning discover the multiethnic city of Targu Mures. Half of the population is Romania, half Hungarian. Visit the center built in Art-Nouveau style. The Palace of Culture will impress you for sure. Have lunch in a local restaurant and drive then further to Cluj, the cultural capital of Transylvania. The Old Town is dominated by the St. Michael cathedral and the statue of the Hungarian king Matias Corvinus. Dinner will be served in the hotel.
Day 6: Today you will leave Transylvania and enter a fascinating region: Maramures. This is an unspoiled rural region, where tradition still survives. Maramures is famous for its wooden churches and gates. Visit 2 of the most impressive wooden churches and meet also one of Maramures well-known wood-carvers. You will be accommodated in a village in a comfortable pension the beautiful Iza-Valley and have the opportunity to meet and talk to the locals. In the evening enjoy a dinner in the pension’s garden.
Day 7: See more of Maramures and drive over the Prislop-Pass. The landscapes are truly astonishing. Stop in the town of Campulung Moldovenesc and visit the Wood Museum. Have also lunch in a local restaurant. Drive deeper into Bucovina and arrive at you comfortable hotel in Gura Humorului. Dinner in the hotel
Day 8: The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are one of the most valuable cultural treasures of Eastern Europe and are included in the UNESCO Heritage. The interior, as well the exterior walls are fully covered with Byzantine frescos, telling biblical and historical stories. Visit today the most beautifully preserved monasteries in Voronet, Moldovita and Sucevita. After the tour in Moldovita, the nuns also invite us to lunch. Enjoy an evening at leisure.
Day 9: The journey takes you today to Northern Moldavia. In the village of Agapia visit the biggest nuns monastery in Europe, where over 400 nuns are living. It is actually a whole village inhabited only by nuns. Visit also the most important monks monastery in Romania, the Neamtz monastery and have lunch. Drive further to Piatra Neamt.
Day 10: In the morning, through the imposing 6 miles (11km)-long Bicaz-Gorge you arrive back to Transylvania. This part of Transylvania is called the Szeklerland and is inhabited mainly by Hungarians. Have lunch in Miercurea-Ciuc and visit in the afternoon a town founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic knights, Prejmer. In the late afternoon arrive in Brasov, one of the richest cities in Transylvania. In the evening enjoy dinner and a folklore show in a restaurant on the main marketplace.
Day 11: In the morning visit Bran Castle and find out more about Vlad the Impaler and the legend of Dracula. Come back to Brasov and discover the Black Church, the biggest Gothic cathedral in Eastern Europe. After lunch explore more of Brasov on your own. The city has much to offer. In the evening you will dine in a former bastion of the city, set on a hill. The Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra will perform for you!
Day 12: Leave Transylvania and stop in Sinaia. The Peles Castle in Sinaia is the former summer-residence of the Romanian Royal family. You will be impressed by its decorated rooms. Have lunch near the castle and arrive in the afternoon in Bucharest. In the evening join the farewell dinner in Bucharest most elegant restaurant.
Day 13: Good-bye, Romania! Your transfer to the airport is included.
