Join Viva! Tours on a Trip to Patzcuaro, Mexico "The Door to Heaven" in Colonial Mexico Customized Escorted Small Group Tour

7 Nights, April 22 to April 29, 2007

Come travel with Suzanne and CC, owners of Viva! Tours to Patzcuaro, a colonial gem in the central highlands of Mexico. This charming, small city, founded in the 16th century, combines a unique mixture of colonial European influence with the ancient Pre-Hispanic Purepecha culture. Patzcuaro’s rich indigenous heritage is evidenced in its original meaning in the Purepecha language, “door to heaven”. It is a land of immense natural beauty, set on a lake surrounded by rolling hills. Explore the original Purepecha villages around Lake Patzcuaro—each with its unique artisan tradition including mask carving and textile embroidery. Visit the archaeological ruins at Tzintzuntzan, “Place of the humming birds” and the copper-crafting worskshops of Santa Clara del Cobre. Patzcuaro takes you back in time with its white-washed Spanish colonial buildings with red tiled roofs clustered along cobbled streets. You can sample good coffee and wonderful local food in its delightful plazas. There are numerous fine art galleries, boutiques and antique shops waiting for your exploration.

Cultural Highlights

· Day tour to Santa Clara del Cobre, a copper mining town where you can still see families crafting copper items that are for sale.

· Experience the ancient Purepecha culture as we visit the indigenous villages of Tocuaro and Erongaricauro with a Purepecha trilingual guide. Learn about the corn culture while observing tortillas being made over an open fire.

· Cook a Mexican meal using fresh, local produce, taught by a talented, local chef.

· Experience the exciting sounds and aromas of the native food and artisan craft markets.

· Either group or one-on-one classes in the Spanish language or the indigenous Purepecha language are available (for an extra fee).

· Ample free time for local cultural events, art galleries, shopping, and historic sites on your own.
