An extended Alaska Trekking Route.
This is one of our longer treks, and one of the best. A stunning flight through the Chitistone valley and Skolai Pass leads you to the starting point of this week long adventure in the Nutzotin Mountains which are in the far north country of the park.
We start in the northern lowlands of the Beaver Creek area then move through wide open tundra ringed by the high country that beckons us on. Beautiful lakes and lonely passes offer a multitude of camping possibilities.
We continue trekking from the wildflower covered lowlands up to windy passes then drop down again into broad river valleys then on again to the high country. We wind or way down from a plateau into a dramatic, sculpted river canyon begging to be explored.
Then a vigorous hike lifts us up to a lofty ridge line where we are captivated by stunning views of snow capped peaks in all directions as we walk down the spine of the crest.
In one direction lie the lush and marshy Solo Flats and in another the sprawling White River meanders at the feet of Mt. Bona, Sulzer and their ice encrusted neighbors. The hours spent hiking this ridge are a highlight of the route.
With a little luck we may see some of the caribou that sometimes pass through this country. Opportunities for exploring and some easy scrambling abound along this trekking route. This is an excellent choice if your vacation schedule requires an early season trip.
When the passes in the southern part of the park are still covered in snow this route is usually melted out. This is an excellent choice if you are interested in extended trekking with lots of variety of terrain. Of all the routes we do, this one has the greatest feeling of vast open space and expansive landscapes.
