Of the estimated 800 species to be found in Ethiopia, 30 are endemic.
The wattled Ibis, the Abyssinian long claw, Black Headed sis kin among others can be seen in and out the national parks. Even though it is difficult to single out specific sites suitable for good bird-watching, it is however, relatively easy to spot many of them, including the endemic ones. The best time to join our bird watching program is between November and February. Our touring programs to the national parks and highland plateau provide excellent opportunity to viewers. Less rare than in other parts of Africa, the lammergeyer, Gypaetus barbatus, can often be observed in the highlands, too. Route: Debre libanos, Zway, Langano, Abyata, Shalla, Awassa, Wendo Genet, Bale, Sodore, and Menagesha Forest. Transport: By car. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa. Transfer to hotel. O/N Addis Ababa. Day 2: Drive to Debre Libanos (103 Km) to the north of Addis Ababa, visit the Debre Libanos Monastery and Gregarious Gelada baboons peer curiously at you while birds of prey soar over head, drive back to Addis to our hotel in the evening. O/N Addis. Day 3: Early in the morning drive to Lake Zway, shelters a variety of water birds. After spending a couple of hours around this lake. continue driving to Lake Langano to spot colorful birds. O/N Langano. Day 4: In the morning after breakfast visit Lake Abyata and Lake Shalla, where you spot water birds such as white pelicans, flocks of ducks, waders and flamingos, continue driving to Awassa for some enjoyable bird spotting. O/N Awassa. Day 5: In the morning after breakfast visit the fish market, where you will spot various birds. Continue driving to Wendo Genet–here an old but cozy hotel provides you great views to Endemic birds and an opportunity to bathe in the natural hot springs and hot swimming pool. O/N Wendo Genet. Day 6: After breakfast drive to Bale mountains passing through farmlands of south East Ethiopia, stop at different places to see Endemic birds of Ethiopia. O/N in Dinsho Lodge. Day 7: After breakfast visit the Bale Mountains National Park – the home of most of Ethiopian Endemic birds and Endemic animals. It is here you will satisfy your need to see endemic plants, mammals and 14 endemic birds. O/N in Dinsho Lodge. Day 8: In the morning after breakfast drive to the Afro-Alpine setting of Sanetti Plateau, home to the Endemic Simien Fox and the beautiful spot breasted plover. O/N Dinsho Lodge. Day 9: After breakfast drive through Arsi to Sodore you have an opportunity to bathe in the natural hot springs and International hot swimming pool. O/N Sodore. Day 10: After breakfast drive back to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon your leisure time. O/N Addis Ababa. Day 11: In the morning after breakfast drive to Gefersa Lake and to the Menagesha Forest. Menagesha Forest is an area of ancient forest located about 1 hour from Addis Ababa on the steep slopes of Mount Wuchecha. It is home to many indigenous trees (400 year old giant juniper and podocarpus), Endemic birds (Abyssinian cat bird, Banded barbet, Golden backed wood pecker, black headed forest oriole and wattled ibis) and endemic animals (Menelik's bushbuck and Colobus monkey). Drive back to Addis Ababa and Transfer to Bole International Airport for final departure with many magnificent photos and special memories. Notes:
