Our introductory Winter Course, which allows you to expand your hiking and climbing seasons from the summer to the winter, spring, and fall seasons. This Basic Winter Mountaineering course enables you to build the skills needed for more advanced mountaineering adventures, whether expedition climbing, ski touring, snow-shoeing, or winter mountaineering on your local peaks. Designed to build basic skills for all types of winter adventurers; snow-shoers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, and summer mountaineers wanting to expand their season. You will learn the fundamentals of establishing a winter camping, traveling over winter terrain, basic avalanche safety/rescue, winter survival, staying warm, winter route finding, and mountain safety as well as technical skills in ice ax self-arrest, crampon use, and basic rope travel. The course culminates with an winter attempt of Lassen Peak (10,463 ft) in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the southern most Volcano in the Cascade Range.
