The Khibiny mountains (an old Saami name) are located in the centre of the Kola Peninsula, 80 km north from the White sea and 120 km south from the Barents sea. This is a horseshoe-shaped plateau composed of alkaline rock, nepheline syenite, which was crystallized about 380 million years ago from magmatic melts of gigantic volcanoes, like the Kilimanjaro in Africa.
Volcanoes got extinct ages ago, and were exposed to erosion and glacier flattening. However, 10000 years ago when the glacier disappeared, the massif began to grow again. The top of the massif furrowed with glacial scars, is rising now about 1000 meters above the surrounding hilly plain covered by a thin layer of sand, clay and peat-bogs which covers underneath metamorphic rocks of about a three billion years old.
Vast valleys with the Kola greatest lakes - Imandra (180 km long and 30 km wide) and Umba (45x12 km) adjoin the mountains from the west and east. The highest tops are found in the western area of the massif, and the highest point is Chasnachorr (1191 m).
There are a lot of rivers and lakes in the mountains, multiple streams drying up in autumn and being born in snow melting. The greatest mountain lakes are the Maly Vudiavr and Bolshoi Vudiavr, they are located in the southern part of the Kukisvum valley at the altitude about 315 meters over the sea level.

Day 2: Transfer to the train station. Boarding of the train St.Petersburg-Apatity, in a bed-van. Train N016 departs at 08:55. Accommodation: train. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Arrival to the Apatity station at 08:08. By bus to Kirovsk. Skiing to Kuelpor hut, 275 m through the pass of Kukiswumchorr, 480 m to the Kuniok Valley. Luggage transportation with skidoo. Night in the hut. Accommodation: Hut. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Ski safari m.Kaskasniunchorr, 1100 m. Back to the hut. Night in the hut. Accommodation: Hut. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Ski ascent/descent to m. Putellichorr, 1111 m. Back to the hut. Night in the hut. Accommodation: Hut. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Start out on 3 day round ski tour. Crossing of South Chorgorr 850 m pass into the Meridionalni spring valley to a tent-refuge, 330 m, with stove-heater. Night in the tent. Accommodation: tents. (B, L, D)
Day 7: Ski ascent/descent to m. Chasnachorr, 1189 m. Back to the tent. Accommodation: tents. (B, L, D)
Day 8: Return to the hut across the North Chorgorr pass, 1010 m. Night in the hut. Accommodation: Hut. (B, L, D)
Day 9: Ski safari m. Rischorr, 1018 m. Back to the hut. Night in the hut. Accommodation: Hut. (B, L, D)
Day 10: Start out on 3 day return trip over the West Petrelius pass, 846 m to another tent-refuge, 410 m, in the Malaia Belaia River valley. Night is in the tent. Accommodation: Tents. (B, L, D)
Day 11: Ski ascent/descent to m. Yudychwumhorr, 1200 m. Back to the tent. Accommodation: tents. (B, L, D)
Day 12: Across the Ramzay Gorge pass, 730 m to the Maly Wudiavr lake, to Tirvas hotel, 220 m. Luggage transportation from Kuelpor hut with skidoo. Transfer to the Apatity train station. Boarding of the train Apatity- St.Petersbourg, in a bed-van. Train № N015 departs at 22:51. Accommodation: train. (B, L, D)
Day 13: Arrival St.Petersburg at 22:27. Transfer to Octaviana mini hotel. Overnight at the hotel. Accommodation: Octaviana. (B, L)
Day 14: Time for pleasure. Accommodation: Octaviana. (B)
