This advanced avalanche course consists of 24 hours of instruction in both lecture, video, discussion, and field study (at least 14 hrs) in the Shasta back country.
A level II course for snowshoes, back country skiers, snow boarders, mountaineers, snow rangers, ski patrol, professional mountain guides needing advanced field study and / or a review of avalanche techniques.
A review of snow mechanics along with avalanche hazards evaluation will be taught through lectures and hands-Also included is advanced avalanche beacon practice and rescue techniques on field study. Course curriculum is based on the American Avalanche Association Level II course guidelines.
Level II instruction includes:
- Snow metamorphism
- Guidelines and recording standards
- Snow packs and avalanche observations
Additional topics include:
- Advanced route selection and Decision making
- Avalanche recognition
- Snow profiles and evaluation
- Ski testing, using the glide block test
- "The hasty pit"
- Route finding considerations for the professional mountain guide, snow rangers or ski patrollers

Duration: 2-1/2 days. Upon arrangement with 4 or more.
Note: Runs midweek (mon-weds) can be combined with Basic Avalanche in 6 days session.

- Courses start at noon on the first day through 4:00 pm on the last day.
- Take both Avalanche Level I and Level II courses for $550.00 and save $50.00.
- This course fulfills the "Level II" requirements for the National Park Service, Forest Service, and guide associations.
