Day 1: You will fly from home to Beijing. The adventure begins!
Day 2: You will arrive in Beijing and will continue in the airport for your flight to UlaanBaatar. There your guide will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
Day 3: Morning visit Gandan Monastery (80 foot tall statue of Buddha, practicing Tibetan Buddhist Lamas). Then visit lunch visit the National History Museum. Then we will take you to visit a family in an apartment in UB. You can see how they live, ask any questions that you want and enjoy their hospitality. B, L
Day 4: 11-day Central Mongolia Trek (Gobi-Hanghai Mtns–Karakhorum–Lake Huvsgal). Today you will drive south on the main Gobi road. You will visit the ruins of the Manzaniir Temple and continue down to the mid-Gobi area. You can also visit the springs and a crystal lined cave. You will continue south and stay at a ger camp. B, L, D
Day 5: You will proceed south until you reach the Dalzandadgad area. You will arrive at Juulchin ger camp NO#1. Once settled in the camp we will take you on a tour of the area including Yol Am. This incredibly beautiful valley features one of the anomalies of nature found in Mongolia- here in the midst of the Gobi Desert is a glacier coming out of the mouth of a cave that is still frozen even throughout the summer. Day 6: You will continue on your trek, stopping at the Flaming Cliffs (where dinosaur fossils were discovered in Mongolia, especially many eggs). You will also visit a camel herder (and take a short camel ride, if you want) and see the large dunes and varied countryside sites. You will continue on your trek to the Khongor-in Els Sand dunes. You will stay in Juulchin Ger Camp #2. B, L, D
Day 7: Today you will drive out to the Baanzag area, where you may even find a dinosaur fossil embedded in the ground. Sleep in a ger camp. B, L, D
Day 8: Today you will turn north and head toward Karakhorum, the ancient capital of Chingis Khan. You will see the beautiful Mongolian Steppe, visit Nomads along the way and enjoy Nomad hospitality. Arrive at the ger camp. When you arrive at Karakhorum, you will be checked into the ger camp. B, L, D
Day 9: You start the day in Karakhorum. You will visit Erden Zuu, which is an active Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. There are several interesting buildings, Buddhist artwork and possibly view a Buddhist service. Then you will stop to view one of the 9th century stone tortoises. You will then drive to Horgo, which is an extinct volcano. You will drive through some of the incredibly beautiful Hanghai mountains area, which has many vistas. You will stay at a ger camp. B, L, D
Day 10: Today you are free to explore the Horgo volcano and the Terkiin Tsagaan Lake area. If you want, along the way, we will visit various Nomads and you can learn about their local crafts, favorite foods and their daily lives. Upon arriving at the lake you can also hike, horse-ride, fish or just leisurely enjoy the area. B, L, D
Day 11: Today you will drive to Lake Huvsgal. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth. You will arrive in Hatgal and will be transferred to the Ger camp. There will be opportunities to ride horses, go for nature walks and enjoy the beautiful sunset in this pristine woodland and lake setting. You can also visit Hatgal and see some of the native crafts and artwork from the area. D
Day 12: You will continue to enjoy the countryside. If we can get a boat to go to the west side of the lake, the reindeer people may be available to meet us. Optional: Horse-back riding, nature tours, etc. and practice shooting a Mongolian bow. B, L, D,
Day 13: You can continue enjoying this georgeous Lake Huvsgal area. You can hike, fish and enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
Day 14: You can enjoy the morning at the ger camp while you are waiting for the return flight, as the air strip is just minutes from the camp. Upon returning to UlaanBaatar, we will transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free. B, L, D
Day 15: Today you will visit the Chojiid Lama Buddhist Museum. This area used to be an active monastery but now is just a museum. One of the statues there actually has the remains of a revered monk inside of the statue. After lunch we will take you to the Bogd Khan Summer and Winter Palace. We will also take you out to the the Horse Race Camp to see the various families camping and preparing for the the races.
Late afternoon option: There is a a Pre-Naadam concert which offers the best of Mongolian talent from traditional Mongolian music, dance and contortionism, to Western Classical performance and even the best Mongolian Rock groups.
Day 16: Naadam Festival. Go to the wonderful Nadaam Festival! This national celebration of independence includes an opening ceremony in Nadaam Stadium and a competition of the three national sports- Horse-racing, Archery and Wrestling. You will view the opening ceremonies and some of the competition of each of the three sports. B, L,
Day 17: Ulaanbaatar Day: Today you will visit the Zanabazar Art Museum. After lunch we will visit Natural History Museum and if time permits you can go shopping at the Gobi Cashmere Store which features fine Mongolian cashmere and camel hair garments as well as State Department Store. B, L
Day 18: Hustai Natural Reserve: 2 day - 1 night. We drive back east and visit the Dutch Horse Ranch. We will spend the night there. B, L, D
Day 19: After breakfast, we will return to UB. We will check you back into the hotel. After lunch the rest of the day is free. B, L
Evening Option: Ger restaurant with a private cultural show.
Day 20: You will be transferred for an early flight home via Beijing with a lifetime of memories.
