Mount Elgon is an extinct Volcano that erupted 24 million years ago. Hiking this mountain presents an exciting setting of unique flora and fauna, waterfalls, caves, peaks and gorges and hot springs. Hiking takes place the whole year but better during dry moths of June to August and December to March. No technical experience is needed.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1:
Picked from your hotel residence from Kampala. Drive to the eastern part of the country stopping in Jinja and continue to Mbale town. Visit Mt. Elgon National Park offices in Mbale for briefing, after lunch carryout for little food shopping in town to supplement what you have and proceed to Budadiri. Check in at Rose Last Chance Hotel.
Day 2:
After breakfast clear with park offices, rangers, porters before starting the climb. You will follow the Sasa trail, which is the less difficult and convenient trail to access the peaks. The trail passes through the largest area of bamboo forest in the park, continue through the Mude cliffs and crosses River Sasa. Overnight will be at Mude Cave Camp.
Day 3:
After breakfast, continue with hiking. The climb takes you over Jackson’s pool before making it to Wagagai Peak (4321m) or Jackson peak (4165m). This will be one of your longest days while on this trail as you struggle to reach the summit. Return to Mude Camp for overnight.
Day 4:
Visit the Caldera with collapsed peaks on top of the mountain stretching over 40 km. This is believed to be one of the biggest caldera in the world. Descend l to overnight at Kagyenyi camp or any other camp depending on the guide’s advice.
Day 5:
Hike to the hot springs and Suam gorge and descend to overnight Mude camp.
Day 6:
Descend following the Sasa trail. It may be steep but it will not be long. Overnight at Rose Last Chance Hotel in Budadiri town.
Day 7:
After breakfast drive to the romantic Sipi Falls on Kapchorwa road seeing the scenic slopes of the mountain settled on by Bagisu communities. Explore the Sipi Falls area and proceed to Mbale for lunch. After lunch drive to Jinja, visit the source of River Nile and proceed to Kampala. End of safari.
Recommend Bringing: Tent, Sleeping bag, Warm clothes/gloves/hat, Sturdy hiking shoes, Flash light, Water bottle, Rain Gear and First Aid Kit.
Departure from Kampala daily is available for private arrangements
Clients will carry hiking shoes, sleeping bags, warm clothes. Mountain hiking takes place throughout the year, however during months of April, May, October and November experience more rains but this does not stop hiking activities.
