So reads a panel at the entrance of the Agha Khan Shahi Polo ground in Gilgit, south of the famous Silk route from China to the west, in the Northern areas of Pakistan. Polo is an important part –if not the most important of these people’s culture. One only has to watch a game of Polo in Gilgit, Chitral, or Skardu, and this fact becomes obvious. Although the precise origins of Polo are obscure and undocumented, there is ample evidence of the existence of the game in the history of Asia.
For more them twenty centuries Polo remained favorite of the rulers of Asia who either played the game or were its patrons. As mounted armies swept back and forth across that part of the world, conquering and conquering, Polo was adopted as the noblest pastime by Kings and emperors, ancient Persian, Arabs, Mughals and Chinese.
Polo at Shandur Pass (1st week of July)
The most exciting Polo tournament is played on the top of the Shandur Pass, situated between the Karakorums and Hindukush ranges, almost 4000 m above sea level. The world’s highest Polo playground is a place quite unique in itself, surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountains in the world.
The event marks the annual rivalry between the two Polo giants of the entire northern areas of Pakistan. The first Polo tournament took place at the Shandur top in 1936. A British political Agent, Major Cobb, the “Major Cobb Moony Polo Ground”.
Untill 1989 eight Polo tournaments have taken place at The Shandur Pass. Since 1989 the Shandur Polo tournament is a permanent feature and it is held in the first week of July every year.
