A Walk Through The African Bush and Travel Writing Workshop…
Loita Hills Trek, Kenya, East Africa May 2008

The African Safari can take many forms, and what most people think of when they think of safari is cruising through the bush in a Land Rover seeing as many species of African wildlife as possible. African Latitude has, for twenty years, been pushing the boundaries of this safari experience. Their trips take intrepid travelers to areas in Africa so remote, yet so unequivocally beautiful, that vehicles can not access these areas. Thus, these expeditions take place on foot. And for this special departure only, join veteran Canadian travel writer and editor Anne Dimon, who will conduct daily sessions to help you learn how to write for travel-focused media outlets, as well as African-specialist Sarah Fazendin, who, having spent much time in East Africa, will help you fall in love with this amazing part of the world.

Loita Hills Trek and Travel Writing Workshop Highlights:
Enjoy a total of 10 days in Kenya, including:

Three nights in the Masai Mara for viewing endless game on endless plains. Accommodation in luxury tented camp on private concession.
Four nights trekking in the Loita Hills, lightweight camping. Walking with Masai guides in the Loita forest and Nguruman Escarpment.
Two nights at Shomple, luxury resort. Experience the art of mixing luxury and landscape.
Dates (commencing in Nairobi, Kenya): May 14th – 24th, 2008

Note: African Latitude reserves the right to change itineraries based on weather or other considerations as necessary.

Tour Itinerary:

Days 1, 2 and 3: Nairobi - Masai Mara Game Reserve

This morning we take a one hour flight from Wilson airport to the Masai Mara National Reserve where we camp in mobile luxury tents in a private concession for the next three days. Enjoy game viewing in the Masai Country.

Day 4: Loita Hills

Leaving the game reserve on our last day in vehicles, we head for the Loita Hills. Even outside the park boundary the wildlife is abundant. It's not unusual to pass a herd of Thompson's gazelle or wildebeest close to the Masai dwellings.

Day 5: Engare Nanyuki

Leaving our vehicles and accompanied by our Masai guides we head into the hills on foot.

Day 6: Tiamanagen

We follow the edge of the Nguruman forest where there are colobus monkeys and Hartlaubs turaco. We are now very close to the Tanzanian border and forest has given way to open fields. There are many Masai villages and we frequently meet with herdsmen and warriors.

Day 7: Oldoro Oibor

A short walking day takes us to the edge of the Rift Valley. We spend a leisurely afternoon feeling on top of the world.

Day 8: Pakase - Shompole

Passing through Mima we descend the escarpment heading toward Lake Natron and into the Rift Valley. Our final destination today is Shompole Lodge. Here each guest will enjoy a well-deserved full body massage.

Day 9: Shompole

Today is a day of relaxation and exploring the areas of Magadi & Natron.

Day 10: Shompole – Nairobi

After a relaxing morning we check out after breakfast and transfer to the airstrip for a flight back to Nairobi and onwards international flights.
