Delight in the sights and sounds of this 1.8 million-hectacre secluded jungle paradise containing over 1000 species of birds, 13 species of monkeys, caiman, tapir, the endangered giant otter, and the stealthy jaguar. Most travelers to the Manu Amazon never actually enter the park itself as few accommodations exist there and tours tend to only skirt the edges. This tour truly allows you to experience the wonders of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Lima. Overnight.
Days 2-4: Fly Cusco and Explore the Cloudforest (2B,2L,2D)
These days follow the same itinerary as the Manu Biosphere trip. Fly to Cusco on Day 2 and descend into the cloudforest on Day 3 to overnight at the Cock-of-the-Rock lodge. On Day 4 you depart by bus for Atalaya. Board motor canoes to travel down the Alto Madre de Dios River towards the Manu River. You'll spend this night near the mouth of this jungle river in a simple tent camp.
Day 5: Manu Wildlife Tent Camp (B,L,D)
Wake to the fanciful sounds of jungle birds nesting on the riverbank. After an early breakfast, you’ll travel by motorized canoe 5-6 hours up the Manu River to the Manu Wildlife Tent Camp. This camp is located near Cocha Salvador, the largest and most beautiful of the 13 oxbow lakes of the Manu River. Since most lodges are located outside Manu National Park, this is one of the few sites where travelers can actually overnight in the park, allowing unique access to an area considered to have the richest biodiversity anywhere. Enjoy an evening stroll near the lodge and marvel at the symphony of jungle night sounds that fill the air.
Day 6: Cocha Salvador/ Manu National Park (B,L,D)
Visit Cocha Salvador where you’ll take a canoe or catamaran to observe the endangered giant otters that call this lake home. Spend the afternoon hiking the miles of nearby trails with your naturalist guide in search of kinkajous, brocket deer, agoutis, and other elusive mammals that prowl these jungle pathways. The abundant wildlife and diverse flora in this rainforest wonderland are sure to delight the nature enthusiast in us all.
Day 7: Cocha Otorongo/ Manu National Park (B,L,D)
Begin the morning with a short motorized canoe ride to the trailhead for Cocha Otorongo, the best place in the Manu lowlands to spot Wooly Monkeys. You’ll explore these trails as your guide points out the diverse flora and fauna along the way. In the afternoon, climb a 50-foot observation tower to enjoy a birds-eye view of the jungle canopy. Nestled in the treetops, you’ll have the opportunity to spot parrots, toucans, macaws, and monkeys that traverse the surrounding kapok trees. Return to the Manu Wildlife Tent Camp for a relaxing dinner and optional evening walk.
Day 8: Manu National Park/Boca Manu/Cusco (B)
Depart early to catch a charter flight to Cusco or extend your stay in the jungle to visit the macaw clay lick, tapir clay lick, canopy platforms and natural oxbow lakes near Manu Wildlife Center.
