The adventure starts in the narrow streets of historic Cochin, where laden boats still set out past cantilevered Chinese fishing nets. Heading inland you'll have great fun at an elephant training centre - where they are prepared for work in the hardwood forests. From the dramatic scenery of the beautiful "hill station" of Munnar you'll head into Tamil Nadu and the colourful city of Madurai. As one of south India's oldest cities it has been a centre of learning and pilgrimage for centuries.
Periyar National Park, in the cool of the Cardamom Hills, is home to the best of southern India's wildlife. There's plenty to see including wild elephants and possibly tiger or leopard. You'll travel west to the watery wonderland of canals, lagoons and lakes that make up the Malabar Backwaters. Explore this amazing environment from the relaxed comfort of a houseboat or hold on tight for a bullock cart ride through local villages - where you can stay the night. Finally you'll wind down as you complete your journey on one of Kerala's fabulous beaches.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Join trip in Cochin; orientation tour of Fort Cochin
Days 2-3: Visit elephant training camp, Munnar Hill Station & Eravikulam National Park
Days 4-5: Madurai, temple city
Days 6-7: Periyar NP; boat trip & walks
Days 8-9: Malabar Backwaters, overnight on houseboat
Days 10-11: Kovalam - relax by beach
Day 12: Trip ends. Trivandrum
