The ruins of the huge ancient Mayan cities are amongst the world's most impressive. You'll visit the Yucatan's two greatest - Chichen Itza and Uxmal. Having climbed up the steep stairs to the top of the pyramids it is impossible not to be blown away by their size and majesty. The colonial towns of Merida and Valladolid pull you forward 1000 years to when the Spanish ruled - gaining riches from the treasures of the New World and their huge plantations known as haciendas.

There are no surface rivers in the Yucatan - instead they run underground, carving out great caverns and sink-holes (cenotes) and creating secret pools. Taking a traditional horse-drawn cart you'll visit - and swim in some of these beautiful grottos. You'll journey by boat to explore mangroves and jungle in the Sian Kaвan Biosphere - before relaxing on the white sandy Caribbean beaches of Tulum. (For the real Mayan fanatics there are ruins here too!)
