A trip intended for the traveller interested in seeing beneath the surface of Turkey's incredibly varied past. We travel from Ankara to the Mediterranean coast, visiting an abundance of temples, amphitheaters, castles and ruined cities, ranging in period from the ancient Anatolian Kingdoms to the lavish Ottoman Empire. We visit the memorials of Gallipoli, the harsh mountains of the Anatolian plateau, and the strange geological formations of Cappadocia. There is time to relax on magnificent beaches and the fascinating city of Istanbul with its lovely bazaars and atmospheric mosques is a fitting end to the trip.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Start Ankara.
Day 2: Visit Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Ataturk Memorial; to Cappadocia.
Day 3: Explore troglodyte villages of Cappadocia and Uchisar Castle; on to Avanos, famous for its red pottery.
Day 4: Optional balloon ride, visit underground city of Derinkuyu and Sultanhani Caravanserai; to Konya, home of the 'Whirling Dervishes' and old capital of the Seljuk Turks.
Day 5: Visit Konya's Mevlana Museum; explore stunning Graeco-Roman sites of Aspendos and Perge; overnight Antalya.
Day 6: To ancient Lycian city of Phaselis; visit Chimaera to see the flames on the hillside. To coastal resort of Kas.
Day 7: Free day in Kas - optional sea kayaking, paragliding or scuba diving.
Day 8: To Saklikent Canyon for walk and exploration en route to the 'cotton castles' of Pamukkale.
Day 9: To the isolated site of Aphrodisias; on to Selcuk.
Day 10: A full day at the magnificent site of Ephesus.
Day 11: To well-preserved Asceplion and Acropolis of Pergamon.
Day 12: To Canakkale via Troy.
Day 13: To Gallipoli, visit the site of the Allied landings; to Istanbul.
Day 14: Visit Hippodrome, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque and Covered Bazaar.
Day 15: End Istanbul.
